Freshman and sophomore are assholes. They are just immature assholes, who think they are the shit even though they are not.
If you don't have a date to homecoming, don't worry about it. It's not important at all, I think I went to only one dance in high school.
You will need to find a Clique or else you will be a social outcast. Don't worry, it will end when you get to college.
College is so much better than High School. Classes are more interesting, people aren't immature douchebags, and you are away from your parents.

Mostly it's just freshmen who are assholes. about 25% of them are too shy to do anything, but most of the rest of them just act loud and obnoxious to hide the fact that they are scared shitless.
As far as dances, you don't really need a date. Going with friends is a lot of fun. If you can get a date, more power to you.
Cliques are bullshit. I thank God it didn't happen at my school.

Freshmen Friday is basically the equivalent of Gang Beatdowns on the first Friday of the school year done by immature seniors or sophomores who think their tough shit. Usually girls are allowed out of it, but only kids who can fend for themselves manageably don't get the living shit beat out of them.

Say hi and be friendly to everybody, even if it might seem awkward. Strike up conversations, and don't be afraid to ask for their number and call them over to hang out. Making friends can make your high school experience so much easier. In middle school, you may not have not needed to take notes, but in high school, everything changes. Pay attention and right down fucking everything. Tape recorders aren't a good idea, because they allow you to tune out and miss important information.

Also, this may or may not work for you, but instead of having lunch, I snack 24/7 to stay alert, and have something like a granola bar before gym. Depending on how big your high school is, you may be better of carrying around all your stuff in a messenger bag or something instead of using your locker.
