The alternate reality part isn't too clear, but what's known is that america lost its revolutionary war, with britain keeping all its colonies. A short time later, napoleon managed to succeed in his wars, and took over the british isles. The monarchy fled to america, and restrengthened their position there, with europe coming under the control of napoleon. Skip forward about 200 years and you've got the brittanian empire in the americas, european union in europe, africa, and russia, and the chinese federation controlling everything left on the eurasia continent. It's worth noting australia is neutral and not well mentioned during the series. However, [sp]I believe it was marked as brittanian/black night domain in the latter parts of season 2 when lelouch does his side switching. I'm not sure, as I don't have a screencap available and am not going back to watch them.[/sp]
