It's what happens when you try to modernize a show instead of trying to make it timeless.
Putting memes in your work tends to work better the less attention you draw to it. At the very least, jaded internet veterans like us will react better to it.
For a possible exception, see: Sanic figurine in Steven Universe: https://youtu.be/l1C-4UkJ3Is?t=5m15s
I don't really recall people objecting over that one. It even takes up a large amount of screen space rather than being a simple background object, but the difference might lie in its relative obscurity (compared to rage faces and image macros, at least, not entirely sure how well known sanic is overall) and how the writing allows for it to be easily glossed over if you are unfamiliar with Sanic and/or are watching the show fifty years from now. It's not like Steven Universe never dates itself, but overall I find it does a pretty decent job.

Basically, writing in a joke that requires you to be familiar with a meme that most people will only find funny for a short period of time, and writing it in a way where audiences in the future will usually react with something like "Wait, was that supposed to be funny?" when they don't get it is a bad move. An even worse move is to write in a meme that most people have already stopped finding funny by the time the episode airs. Granted, rage faces seem to have aged better among certain demographics or circles that a lot of us on Facepunch aren't really part of.
All these animation errors and bad writing/jokes make me wonder if any of the people working on the show even care about it or Cartoon Network is just forcing them to rush through making each episode because they have toys they need to sell.
Who has the time to write anything other than blatant pop culture references when Cartoon Network wants five new episodes by next week so they can get toys in stores quicker.
that could explain alot
Well Steven Universe is just because it's audience is of the kind that would eat that up and seeing how all the other toys in that scene are copyright dodge it barely applies. It'd be different if it was a superman type toy with a trollface and a T on his chest and he asked what she thinks of his Trollman doll. It's not like that rendition is the meme, the ms paint one is. That's just some kids bad drawing that blew up.
Also Steven universe is like, what 2-3 years old tops? No one gives a shit about the content of a new show because it's being defined at that moment. The fanbase can't be betrayed when it's forming. The reason it's an issue here is PPG is old enough to sleep with legally, and it's back and bastardized by stupid shit.
It's less impactful if the memes are there in the beginning, because the only people who care about it already accepted it.
The problem is that these remade shows usually aren't made by the people who worked on the original.
Yeah that's true. Sucks doesn't it? D: RIP legends of children's animation. Though saying that, disney produce some kickass movies still.

IMHO they should've greenlit a full show of Super Best Friends Forever instead

Tara Strong, Nicole Sullivan & Grey DeLisle.

Yeah, basically you could say it's a DC PPG, Lauren Faust made it, she's Craig McCracken's wife and worked with him on the PPG, she also loves Tara Strong's voicework, that's why when she makes a cartoon she usually makes her voice a character
While I like the art style of it, Batgirl seems... off.
Yea it sounds like she's using her Paz voice instead of the one she used in BTAS
I'm just tired of cutesy flash animated superhero shows.
It's like Cartoon Network fears no little kids will watch their network if they make anything "too dark and violent" And that means no little kids will buy the merchandise.

Serious about that "letting this thread die" quip, everyone's just going to approach to the same conclusion.

I just turned off the tv when I saw this.
Is there even any context for all the crap they pull in the reboot?

It very much seems to be

They've done it before. They have a gang that is just one character copied several times.

I think it's the same parts of a background in different positions but I haven't watched the episode

Jesus fuck. What have they done to these characters?
They've made them "hip" and "with it"

That may be part of it, but I feel like that can be applied to the overall quality rather than just memes specifically. The poor handling of memes in the new PPG contributes to its poor quality in addition to everything else, and that overall poor quality is what's leaving people feeling betrayed. If this was a good reboot with tastefully-handled memes, then I don't think people would really care.
Unless you hold the view that there is no such thing as a tastefully-inserted meme, which I would understand.
Did I stumble across the Cartoon Network hate thread? Oh, sorry.
I think I'm still going to give the show a shot (maybe tomorrow), will report back with anger if there's anything I want to contribute to the thread.

We need a new MegasXLR, but only if it's as painfully stupid and cool as before.

Ey man, I fucking love modern CN, but this is absolutely fucking dreadful.
The only shows I really don't like that much on CN are TTG and the new PPG, other than that the channel is pretty damn great compared to what it was years ago.
Maybe I just finally grew out of Cartoon Network. But every show that Cartoon Network (not counting Boomerang) has released in the last 6 years I have just found EXTREMELY boring or just bad.
