The reason there are so many file extensions and websites for the same thing is because whilst the internet is still a moderately free place without many restrictions, people should be able to do whatever they want.

It's like saying to a business that they can't open a coffee shop because there are already thousands upon thousands in the world.

OGG (Theora) is good for games which need to keep the filesize down

Regarding video, there's WMV which I recommend, because if you know how to encode it properly, it can be as good as H.264 above 1.5mbps

The good thing about .ogg is that you can read the file from start to the end without searching, which is why it is suitable to be used as a streaming source over internet.

Dropbox is the best file host ever IMO. You get 2 gigs storage for free, plus an upload client for your computer. You can upload [I]any[/I] file type and it's very convenient.
