and then the thread spiraled into arguing about female protagonists fuck video games
ruh roh, you're barking up the wrong tree being a poster on a video game forum then aren't you
You know who was a great Female character (granted, not a lead, but still) Caroline Becker of the Wolfenstein series. She kicked ass, and lead the Kreisau Circle.
Cate Archer from the No One Lives Forever games. Strong, independent, smart, capable, and takes horrible shitty jabs from inferior male agents the entire series length and does it in stride. Please bring those games back someone
Nobody's getting mad if you make male characters in ANY fashion. They can be as flamboyant, sexy, stereotypical, whatever, as ANYONE wants to make them, with zero negative consequences. Meanwhile if Female characters are made in certain ways, people get up in arms in two seconds flat.
smaller amount of content = easier to scrutinize female characters are a minority in comparison to male characters so no shit people'll notice a terribly written one more easily. like, barely anybody bitches about horribly written males because they're just so goddamn common that you can dismiss them in a second. like, for every nathan drake or solid snake there's like 40 boring white call of duty shooter dudes.
My $0.02 with Bayonetta is that she's allowed to get away with sexualization; it's done explicitly on purpose, and actually goes through and works with it. They base her off of being sexy, and make her powerful for it.
I don't think Faith is as bad as you guys make her out to be! The only thing they really do wrong in Mirror's Edge is brush the (originally rich before it was cut) backstory under the rug. Besides this the cutscenes do provide a fair amount of good stuff.
I've seen no trace of this "rich backstory" I've seen brought up and I'm more and more inclined to believe it doesn't actually exist. Faith gets far too much credit and is pretty telling of how low the standards are in this medium. She's still very pale in skin tone to appeal to whites (much like what Valve did to Alyx and Chell, and is a reason they deserve no compliment as well), isn't portrayed notably different than a white female or even a male, and ultimately she has no dialogue outside of cutscenes and the first-person perspective means you rarely even see her. Any form of sex or sexualization is a weapon used by the patriarchy to subdue women and will continue to be, at least until male-female attraction, sex, etc is discouraged or ideally completely eliminated.
Strong character with idealised body. Unoffensive.
Bayonetta is complete garbage
stopped right there lol
stopped right there lol
tbh as much as i hate "hurr durr boobs and fighting" characters, i just cant hate bayonetta shes sexy as fuck, but shes also a good character. if game writers can nail that (they usually cant lol) then sexy characters are a-okay. like, i never felt uncomfortable playing as her when my family was in the room like i do when i play as other female characters.
Looks like LurkyLurker needs to LurkyLurk some more.
LurkyLurker's posts read like MRA's strawman of a feminist almost exactly. The post is just missing the excessive caps, repeating the same point over and over again as if it'll make it more true, and excessive swearing.

I honestly can't take you seriously, especially with your wording. In fact, I'm 99% sure you're just trying to rile up reactions.
Male Power Fantasy vs. Male Sex Fantasy either way there's no place for actual women in this
You know that it's not so black and white. While there is a difference between the ideal male or female aesthetic as perceived by men and women, there is a fair bit of overlap. Duke and Lara Croft are both massive caricatures so they're hardly good examples, but the idea that women don't like muscles and don't want to be thin, busty and attractive is just stupid.
stopped right there lol
It's gotta be a joke, right? That kind of buzzword density and ridiculous anti-sex attitude has to be fake. Bayonetta is amusing though because she's designed by Mari Shimazaki, and even if you think she's sexualised then it's still a female version of female sexualisation and is interesting to see which aspects are emphasised more, particularly her outfit. Even funnier is Hyperdimension Neptunia is designed by a woman named Tsunako, just look at her stuff and try claiming it's male sex fantasy.
Bayonetta is a very special case though, I think, pretty much the exception to the rule
Isn't one of the writers for Rance a woman? Like, one of the primary writers that basically defined most of Rance's traits? Also why are you saying Bayonetta is a "very special case" when he literally gives another example in his next sentence? Do you disagree with Hyperdimension Neptunia being an example?
Bayonetta is a very special case though, I think, pretty much the exception to the rule
What rule? The rule that sexualised characters are bad? There's nothing special about Bayo's sexualisation, they just made a good character and made her design work in context. If you can make it all internally consistent and of good quality then you can have them dress like in Dead or Alive and it works.
Isn't one of the writers for Rance a woman? Like, one of the primary writers that basically defined most of Rance's traits?
Yep. http://alicesoft.wikia.com/wiki/Tori [editline]30th June 2014[/editline] A huge amount of Manga writers in Japan are also female, especially the ones who do porn. Even the genre of Otome games are designed by women for women. Thinking women have completely alien preferences to what is commonly shown isn't accurate, they're just slightly different.

Damn, I missed all the fun in this thread while I was watching the new Transformers.

[editline]29th June 2014[/editline]
What rule? [editline]29th June 2014[/editline] the rule's more like "western writers literally cannot write good "sexy" female characters"
It's hard finding well written characters in general, especially in AAA games. The strange and often ridiculous aversion to sex in the US doesn't help. It makes anything sexual an odd topic and risky so even when it makes sense it's avoided, and anti-sex "feminists" who complain about any kind of female sexualisation at all don't help the matter at all. That said, Triss seems like a good example, even if they cheated by importing a character from the books.
and then the thread spiraled into arguing about female protagonists fuck video games
oh no people are discussing female protagonists in a thread about female protagonists.
Literally the only personality trait we know Chell posesses is that she's a horrible person.
Literally the only personality trait we know Chell posesses is that she's a horrible person.
And she's fat.
And she's fat.
And adopted. [editline]30th June 2014[/editline] And that's terrible.
Makes me sad Iji is so underrated. Deserves the first place so hard it hurts.
