Basically, 1 year discount is sorta meh and 2 year discount is back to usual pricing that everyone else gets. Stupid mobile carriers.

Buy from places like wirefly and amazon, if you buy from a carrier store I guarantee you will be ripped off.

Displaying the content of a website in an App is generally much faster than rendering that website in a browser, because you do not need to parse the HTML - You get the content directly in a proprietary format by calling the API of the website which provides the content. The app then shows it after some minor parsing.
