[QUOTE=Saza;25102142]They're usually a small strip along the bottom or top of screen.
But I'm not sure on Android.[/QUOTE]
They are on Android as well. I'd love free and ad-free versions of the Facepunch app myself.
[QUOTE=Hexxeh;25088662]If you're a rule-abiding Facepunch user you shouldn't have a problem with it. I'm not going into the technical details so much as I don't want people trying to circumvent it (I don't believe it's possible, but even so). This does mean you won't be able to use two accounts (yours and a friends) on the same copy of the app for now, but I'm trying to work out an improved system where you can do this and still protect the app.[/QUOTE]
A lot of your sales will be from Facepunch viewers who don't have an account. If they are unable to browse FP from just opening the app, they will give you 1 star reviews and troll the App's page. If you really are looking to profit from this - I suggest just saying "fuck it" to the DRM system and instead look into building a script that checks the facepunch app on apptrackr.com (I think that's what the main app pirating site is called) and automatically mails you when there is a download link.
What the developer has to consider is the cost involved with publishing and if necessary, the costs related to developing the application. For Apple's store, there is an annual cost of $99 (or £62) for a basic iPhone developer's license - this cost can be off-set by either setting a small price for your app, or by including ads on a FREE version... or even doing both, so the most loyal users have a choice whether to support your cause and help you pay-off that $99 fee, or if they're prepared to endure a relatively small ad banner at the bottom of the page. At least, on the App Store, you'll be totally protected from Piracy - you'll need to do a bit more work on the Android side for Android to be the same.
Android is a rather different can of worms, though. Google only ask for a one-off $25 fee to become an Android Market publisher - this pays for all the facilities that will accompany your application's listing on the market; statistics, crash logs, cloud storage, push messaging and all the other bits hosted by Google as part of Android 2.2. With the Android version, there is a far smaller cost to off-set, that only needs to be paid once. Android Applications (.APKs) can also be freely installed onto any Android device (handset, tablet or otherwise) without having to be published onto the market - this is both a good and a bad thing, as it can either save you $25 as a developer, or it can aid piracy by permitting the APK to be "pulled" from a rooted device and distributed freely.
The latter scenario can actually be circumvented by some kind of authenticity check - possibly by using LVL library and the licensing server, or a periodic version check - if a new version is released, it will take time for the pirate to acquire the latest version and thus render his stolen app useless.
This ought to give you some help: [url]http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/09/securing-android-lvl-applications.html[/url]
I'm a cheapskate myself, at the moment, unable to justify the use of a Credit or Debit card for payments less than £5, particularly on mobile apps, but when Google bring out a "Prepaid card" for the Market, much like an iTunes voucher for the iTunes Store/App Store, I'll be buying apps in no time. Just thought I'd be honest here, and not be a hypocrite.
Just thought I'd lay this all out before you all start demanding that the applications should be free - now you know the reasons (that should have been obvious anyway).
This has my seal of approval.

Of course. They share the same OS.

Not really, but I don't think it's so hard, takes some time to get used to though...
Or you could just say iPod, considering we all know what you're talking about.
I like the postviews from cosmic's mockup, less so that dashboard view though.

This is good. One big problem I'm trying to solve at the moment is how to turn posts into native UI elements. Things like links and YouTube videos don't directly translate into UI elements, so I think I need to basically reparse the BBcode clientside and then figure out how it should be represented.
Looks smexy :3:

Bogged down with work at the moment, but our project proposals are due in this Friday, and I've not even started it yet. I'll likely put up a questionnaire for you guys to fill out to get some idea of what's important to you in the app. I'll also be interviewing garry to find out what he wants from the app. This stuff, while useless to your guys, is part of my coursework and so I've gotta get it out of the way and it's priority right now.[/QUOTE]
Hey, we're all happy enough you're making an FP app instead of something else, might as well help you as much as we can, right?

I sorta had a hunch when it mentioned a beta. I was thinking to myself 'hang on, doesn't the slightest mention of the word beta make Hexxeh foam at the mouth'?
Give it a sexy loading thing.
Like a spinning FP logo or Garry's head would be awesome.
Hexxeh, I was reading the DealExtreme thread and came across this: [url]http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.39169[/url]
When the FP app has been developed for android will it work with that device?
Android 1.6 at a resolution of 800x480.
As I was considering purchasing one and selling my iPod Touch to a friend.

[quote]Q: For what platforms will it be released?
a: iPhone/iPod/iPad, Android is currently confirmed[/quote]
Whether or not it will be released on the same date, nobody knows. Probably not though.
Why even have the paid version? What are the incentives? And think about it like this, why would people buy the paid version if they just download the free version and come on to the site when they get home or whatever.
I'm for it. I'm running a rooted Samsung Moment.

No ads, and you can thank Hexxeh / contribute to his iOS developer program cost.
