And I think its partly a sign of respect also. The person who risked his life to kill a skywhale has given the village lots of food but has still sacrificed himself to turn into a skywhale to further sustain the population, and I think they do know what is going on with the whole eating their transformed kind thing.
Holy shit, now I understand. I thought he just died of some sort and transformed.
That's some real deep shit.
I don't think that they turn into skywhales if they just kill them. One, near the beginning, there were 2 of them walking to the pit, yet, I doubt that they had just finished killing a skywhale, because it seems more like a thing they do every few days (considering how huge they are.) I think that they turn into skywhales just as caterpillars turn into butterflies, except in this case, they turn into a non-sentient form. I think they're non-sentient because of the main character's lack of trying to contact his son after he turned into a skywhale. Instead, he just flew away. They also appear to become non-sentient after their eyes turn black, when they just walk to the building to fall into the pit. i think they turn into skywhales either when they're old, or randomly, but not because they killed a skywhale or something like that.

Or they're the larval form of the whyskales.
Thats was quite unique, never see anything like that anymore. I enjoyed it.

....that's what I said. :saddowns:

I thought it was going to be like those floating penguins, but in whale size.

Eh? I think that the certain part of SkyWhale have a parasitic embryo, that takes control upon its host, and then, after slowly devouring it in the cocoon, escapes into the wild.
Is it bad I have no idea what's going on but also do at the same time.
Reminds me a lot of Speaker for the Dead, and I wouldn't be surprised if Card was inspired by this for that book.
:aaa:
awesome
i wish great, meaningful cartoons like this were still being made, instead of that stupid crap they make now.

The "wife" explained he'd transform, she seemed upset and covered her eyes to show what she was talking about.
that was beautiful

Good point, I didn't think about that. I wonder what causes them to be infected? Maybe the ones who harpooned the skywhale directly, and came up close to it?
Notice how the father is the only one with three stripes? Everyone else has 1 to 2, the son has 0. It's probably to mark their kills.
Also note how the father, with 3 stripes, usurped the other guy at the helm of the ship who only had 2.
My life is now complete

Update:
I found the meaning that the writers were trying to send:
[release]Skywhales, from Animation City in London, creates a science fantasy world on an island floating around in the sky. It is inhabited by green snouty creatures who hunt the great skywhales. (See Animator No. 7 for the background on this film) The directors were Philip Austin and Derek Hayes. When asked about the storyline Derek Hayes explained: ‘It is about not being able to see below the surface. The people do not realise that they turn into skywhales when their time is up.’ It has the look of a pilot for a series but this was not the intention says Hayes: ‘The only kind of series we have in mind is a series of shorts on different subjects. We would have to forget the life cycle aspect of Skywhales to make it into a series.’ When asked if it was typical of their work Philip Austin said: ‘We both enjoy science fantasy and are interested in storytelling. We like to have a strong storyline with an element of fantasy.’ Did they intend Skywhales as a challenge? Austin replied: ‘We felt it would be more convincing if no one could understand the dialogue. We like the distancing effect that the silly language has.’[/release]

That was really interesting, I gasped when I saw that he turned into one himself...
Pretty nice background drawings too...
By the end of this video, my brain farted. What the fuck did I watch.
Cool animation, but not creepy at all.
Also, beepety boop boop boop beep beep.
That's pretty deep man.
