I know everyone will remember them as doing the latter, and they have every right to do so. Youtubes mob mentality is a really good thing, because it protects the community when youtube itself isn't going to give a shit. But I really hope that it was the former.

More like a fat guy at a party sees some people making pizza, so he starts making pizza with really colorful toppings, then accuses the original pizza-makers of taking his pizza "format". People enjoyed his pizza and colorful toppings, so he starts selling them. A few other people at the party start making pizzas with cheaper toppings for free, and people get some form those guys, but it doesn't really impact the fat guy's revenue. He declares that pizza with toppings was his idea, and that you can either join a network where he gets paid for your pizza and makes you use his colorful toppings or he'll sue you, because he trademarked the concept toppings. Everyone at the party is pissed at the fat guy because they don't want a goddamn monopoly on something as innately human as pizza, so he passively-aggressively apologizes, but then people steadily stop buying his pizzas while everyone else exchanges jokes about what a total buffoon the guy is
