I have to help out with this. Too good of an opportunity to pass up.
EDIT: Shit, just realized I'm on my alt. It's MrOwn1/Harmonizer.
Something I've been thinking about is basically an album about the five stages of dealing with death (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance)
five long pieces of music,
the first being jarring and uncomfortable
the second being loud and fast
the third being upbeat yet urgent
the fourth being slow and depressive
the fifth being positive and hopeful
How about a vote?
Agree for 2001: A Space Odyssey
Disagree for Ban story
Funny for Lovecraft
Optimistic for the five stages of death
Zing for something else
Lovecraft - ain't that a bit esoteric?

What about the smug story?

Zing
How about basic emotions like anger, sadness, happiness, lust... What ideas they evoke musically.
I do like the Space Odyssey thing, however that has been done, no?
But I do like how space rock/psychadelic styles can be used.

Bit basic. :smug:

That's similar to my 5 stages idea, because there's vastly different emotions in each

Elaborate, please.
But in all seriousness all these ideas can be coorporated in this album.
Someone explain the Lovecraft thing, I like that track though Hakita.

A Concept album based on the stories of H.P. Lovecraft, with one song for one story.
I like the idea with Chtulu.
I don't like the idea with a concept album revolving around being banned, it seems kinda immature and I don't think you can do a lot of work with such a concept.
I also like the idea of 2001 : A space oddysey, perhaps combine the two?
It could start out with the dawn of man, simple music that revolves around a lot rhythm and not so much on melody. The lyrics could be simple, talking more about the evolution of society as we know it.
The second part is around the middle of the 19th century, with the industrial revolution just around the corner. Now, the music is getting more complex, melody and rhythm are equally important and while still holding on to the subject of mankinds evolution we can start dropping hints on Chtulu, and how he and the other old gods are influencing the decision of the leaders of mankind.
Third part, mankind has started exploring the galaxy. The music is getting more and more complex, the lyrical theme has now almost become only chtulu-related and hints of madness (instruments that sound out of place, whispering when there are vocals and stuff like that) are starting to slip through.
Fourth part, the music is really, really complex and the theme is now Chtulu and the old gods. I'm not sure where we could take it from here.
Thoughts?
Who is Chtulhu?
And how does everyone know what Lovecraft is? :psyduck:
Cthulhu :eng101:
H.P. Lovecraft is a great writer, who is mostly known for his 'hard-to-read' stories involving madness and the purest form of evil.
His stories are usually grim and almost never have a happy ending.
Cthulhu is a character in one of his stories. Its more fun to find out by reading, but if you must, check wikipedia.
Read The Call of Cthulhu
[editline]27th February 2011[/editline]
I can't actually remember how much detail about Cthulhu is revealed in that but still
I haven't read it either, I just mainly know it from my friends who talk about it and the internet. I should buy the book :v:
Are people following a cult and reading his works or is he genuinely one of the greats that I've missed?
Well, its a hit or miss kind of writer.
You should try one of his books.
I'm really intrigued. It blows my mind how it rings a bell but I had no clue what it was all about.
So The Call of Chtulhu is on my list.

Cthulhu
Also, Metallica have written 3 Lovecraft inspired songs. The Call Of Ktulu (hurr), The Thing That Should Not Be and All Nightmare Long.
Continuing on the ideas.
I feel that we're veering into basing the album on what other people have created. Fair enough, Cthulu sounds like an interesting fellow. But we need a point where it is simply easier to follow.
Not everyone knows the greatness of 2001 or has met the Chlutu character.
Well, pretty much the only people who would hear this album would be facepunchers, and I doubt theres one who doesn't know either of them.
They are simply the strongest possible artistic points to start with. Make it a little easier to get some people on board.
Yes, I suggested someone being banned it's the most dumbed down concept that we could possibly get. It's really crap as a concept but it is low on the scale of artistry.
Meet that scale halfway.
Cthulhu getting perma'd?
Fuck yea
Psychological concepts are always cool. Like The Human Equation by Ayreon.
My band's writing a psychological one at the moment actually
