Because no one ever challenged their appreciation to a show. The more you defend your opinion and interest, the more you tend to be entrenched to it. Combined with the internet connecting thousands of "bronies" together, a constant cycle of self encouragement ended up in what we see today.
In a way, the whole MLP fandom is partially created by the hate that surrounds it.
