If TV shows count, Les Mystérieuses Cités d'Or/The Mysterious Cities of Gold's soundtrack is so good it was released on vinyl back in 1983, which was a pretty rare occurrence for an animated series.
I feel this needs a reboot. It has a feel like no other soundtrack, sorrow and joy.

Everytime I hear the last song from Inception called Time, I get chills all over. It is fucking awesome
The greatest movie soundtrack ever, Transformers: The Movie (1986). Pure 1980s hair metal.
Well shit, almost everything I was planning to put down was already listed (AKA everything by John Williams). But I see a few that weren't (some are not films but should be posted here):
awesome
While i agree that The good, the Bad and The Ugly had an awesome score i reckon Extasy of Gold captured the gritty feel of the film better: [editline]11:18PM[/editline] The Band of brothers theme is also very memorable.
Ennio Morricone is a fucking amazing composer
A lot of was listed here already. I would simply add all the Matrix Soundtracks. There are some very powerful and well composed pieces.
The Illusionist Moon TDK Inception The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly PREDATOR [editline]10:03PM[/editline] Sunshine 28 Days Later
Starship Troopers The music in that movie was powerful, Skip to 3:45 if you don't want to watch the whole scene Don't bother with the Second or Third, Stick to the original
Any of Moon OSTs Clint Mansell is a master
So why don't we just go by the composer? I'll name a few. John Williams Ennio Morricone Patrick Doyle Michael Kamen Michael Giacchino Hans Zimmer Alan Silvestri Danny Elfman Don Davis Howard Shore Philip Glass Wojciech Kilar Also, Mark Griskey does some really good video game scores, check out the Knights of the Old Republic II and The Force Unleashed soundtracks.
Blade Runner Soundtrack.
It's not a movie but The 4400 had an awesome soundtrack.
Spawn had a fantastic soundtrack. Took a bunch of well known rock acts and mixed them up with electronic musicians.
