Woah, how long did it take those beach people to notice that wave? It's literally on top of them.
I thought huge tsunami/storm waves like that tend to come in pretty suddenly and quickly, which is part of why they're so dangerous.
I thought huge tsunami/storm waves like that tend to come in pretty suddenly and quickly, which is part of why they're so dangerous.
They're nearly invisible at sea, and only become noticeable one they get into the shore where they start to crest like the above picture. In reality they catch you off guard because movies and such have led us to believe that Tsunamis are huge walls of water when in reality they look hardly different than just a large wake. Except they don't stop at the beach, but keep going and take down buildings because the shear energy within them. A good example is the Japan Tsunami because a boat actually got footage of it at sea: Same set of waves (I think) now at land: When you're at the beach you don't really notice them until it's too late, because from a distance they just look like a normal large wave. Hell, the waves people surf in Hawaii during winter are often bigger in size than a typical Tsunami. It's just tsunamis pack such force and speed that they don't stop at the beach. [editline]4th May 2012[/editline] If there's an offshore earthquake and the water suddenly recedes without warning, that's generally a sign that you should get to higher ground ASAP.

I'm not sure if anyone posted anything about the 1992 L.A. riots. Rodeny King being beaten by LA police officers caught on tape. King after the beating. The police officers involved in the beating were found not guilty. This would be the spark to the LA Riots. Thousands of people in the Los Angeles area rioted over the six days following the verdict. Widespread looting, assault, arson and murder occurred, and property damages topped roughly $1 billion. In all, 54 people died during the riots and thousands more were injured.
but it's not like with the other memorial where it's honouring people who lost their lives to injustice, it's a highly divisive political figure who is open to criticism
Pissing on it and vandalizing is not criticism.

In Canada a couple years ago some guy got drunk on Canada Day and pissed on the War Memorial. There was no picture taken, but we found out his name and the guy was practically tarred and feathered in the papers, and convicted of something and forced to do community service. I don't know what the context is, but off hand I'd punch that guy square in the jaw.
but it's not like with the other memorial where it's honouring people who lost their lives to injustice, it's a highly divisive political figure who is open to criticism
It could be any statue of anyone, and pissing on it and spray-painting it is vandalism, not criticism.
July 7 2005 London Bombings
It could be any statue of anyone, and pissing on it and spray-painting it is vandalism, not criticism.
The fact that there is even some sort of definite line being drawn between "vandalism" and "criticism" is really disturbing. How many monuments have been pulled down (vandalised), graffiti'd up, or tarnished as a form of rejection of the powers that be or criticism of its intentions? Was the vandalisation of the Berlin wall just crime? No, it wasn't, and neither is this. Vandalism is criticism, whether you approve of it or not. [editline]hurdur nit-picking is a good argument, right guys?[/editline] The fact that the Berlin wall is a wall doesn't take away from the main point: that vandalism can be used to make criticisms and protests.

It was also in the best interests of the entire population.

Not the graffiti that looks typical quickly scribbled words.
the berlin wall wasn't a monument it was a wall [editline]5th May 2012[/editline] "i disagree with george washington, better go cover the washington monument in shit"
It sort of turned into a monument really, it became an icon of the Cold War and the divide in Germany at the time.
