It's sad to think of what they did to their own countrymen shortly later, especially after the city folk were cheering the arrival of the Khmer Rouge.

Speaking of which, here's a picture of people cheering the arrival of the Khmer Rouge after they came into the city.
Is this also why they never smile? of was it just not the thing to do
Actually yes, because the older formats for photography took exposures that were minutes long. A lot of the older pictures where you see while families sitting down all stoic and creepy was because they couldn't move an inch for several minutes. The format for those images was called a Daguerreotype, and is considered the first commercially successful photo project. Soon afterward came tintype photography, where photographers could print images on tin using chemicals rather than silver plate. Which made it much more affordable for the common fold, who could now get their pictures taken.

Even though this is recent history, it was probably one of the most icon images of the last decade and transformed a previously unknown senator into presidential material.

Such a shame that the nazis were so evil, because they had the coolest shit when it came to WW2.

I think it's fair to say that power corrupts. And being crazy doesn't help.
Was the Eagle on top of the Reichstag concrete?

How utterly wonderful (horrifying).

I wouldn't call them insane, just heavily indoctrinated.
The fact that McDonalds has served over 99 billion people is pretty crazy I find.

WWII photos in color are amazing.
Why is Lincoln's face always messed up in photos?
We need more Khmer Rouge.
The Nazis were "cool" in the sense that their bad-ass giant empire and style and weapons and shit. I remember one of the first pages I liked on FB was "The Nazis were evil, but damn did they know how to dress".
And fuck Golden Dawn. Sad day in history when fascists gain legitimate political power.
Also, the Nazi's and Germans weren't crazy. Fascism and eugenics were considered legitimate ideologies back in the 1910s-1940s, especially by the rich, and were most common in America and Western Europe. Now when we talk about these ideas, we have so much more info and historical basis and backing than people back then. I wouldn't say any of them were crazy, just with the morals of the time.
The Horton stealth plane is a pretty good example
There's a lot of examples; the Horten pioneered modern day stealth planes, the V-2 pioneered modern rockets, some of the (inhumane) research done on prisoners advanced medical knowledge.
