There's a little more to it than that... If it would increase the risk, then why has nothing happened in quite a while?
That's right. Reminds me of how I scatter banana peels all around my room to scare the giraffes. I don't see many giraffes around, do you ?
There's a little more to it than that... If it would increase the risk, then why has nothing happened in quite a while?
Because our countries have never been in any danger in recent years, a group of religious fanatics with bombs do not easily cross the ocean get through our border and to somewhere important, I always hear people saying "thank you for protecting our country" Heres a damned Idea, pull your boys out of Afghanistan, cut the military budget and spend the remainder of it on home defense. The Taliban is not a legitimate threat, they would never be able to attack us at home. George Bush should be brought infront of the Hague for war crimes, he drags America into this mess and then the British follow (Tony Blair should also be trialed) thousands of people die, and then they leave their post and get on with their lives leaving people there dying everyday.
There's a little more to it than that... If it would increase the risk, then why has nothing happened in quite a while?
Pretty much nothing happened before 9/11 either. You realise that the severity of terror attacks follows a power-law distribution right? Most attacks don't even kill a single person - 9/11's deathcount was a statistical fluke.
Was the Taliban a threat to the USA? Has the process of removing the Taliban had a benefit on the lives of American citizens? What about Afghan citizens?
The Taliban were hiding and working with Alqueda leaders, apparently they were also pretty brutal to the Afghan civilians. With the whole Wahabism thing.
Why does it deserve respect?
They have the courage to stand up and fight for their country, even if they don't think the cause is just or not. I don't agree with the wars the US has been fighting in recent years. If it were up to me we would have gone about the whole Afghanistan situation entirely differently, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't respect the men who fought those wars any less because of it.
Well, if they want to sign up to protect their country I don't see how their action isn't commendable. That doesn't mean their real actions serve this purpose, though.
The Taliban were hiding and working with Alqueda leaders, apparently they were also pretty brutal to the Afghan civilians. With the whole Wahabism thing.
The connection between Al-Qaeda and the Taliban was tenuous before 9/11, and does not by itself justify launching a full-scale invasion. The IRA had support from the Soviets but we didn't launch an invasion of Russia during the Troubles.
They have the courage to stand up and fight for their country, even if they don't think the cause is just or not. I don't agree with the wars the US has been fighting in recent years. They're responsible for their actions - they weren't forced to sign up at gunpoint. I don't see how "standing up and fighting for their country" is something to which we should attach moral value. If it was likely that by doing that, you'd contribute some good to the world, then yes, standing up and fighting for their country would be morally praiseworthy iff you didn't know anything else about the ensuing conflict. However since they did it without any justification to believe they'd even be helping, and we have post hoc evidence that what happened actually worsened the situation, I do not respect their actions. In fact I condemn them.

You guys all seem to have an irrational hatred of Americans and our military.
You guys all seem to have an irrational hatred of Americans and our military.
Don't worry cause then we get to laugh when a war breaks out and no matter what we will be behind them helping. Then they will be like "Thanks." Either that or this forum is acutally a north Korean forum in disguise
I'm not against Americans or Military, I'm against worshipping them like gods. I thought it would be reasonable to be against that.
Sir I have to disappoint you, but there won't be no global conflicts, for at least ~200 years.
I can see maybe not the next 50-70 years, but beyond that it's just too far to predict.

Everything since has been US helping YOU restrain yourself or educate YOUR troops with OUR special forces. [editline]29th May 2012[/editline]
Sir I have to disappoint you, but there won't be no global conflicts, for at least ~200 years.
If the last ten years aren't near-global, then WW1+2 were just regional skirmishes. They had more boom, but this has been the longest post-war shitstorm since the cold shitstorm. There's ALWAYS a global conflict (of interests or war) and 'merica will always be a major faction in them. Part of the culture.
stop thinking with the us/them mindset, it leads to all sorts of insanity
It leads to knowing when to tell a former allie to go fuck themselves and calm down. Totally bonkers! every day we still get the usual "3500 people died, BE FUCKING BUTTHURT YOU EURO-SOCIALIST! Have you no heart?" "I do have a heart, i just cope by getting over it. I'm fucked like that."
Hard to make out because of the photo, but it looks like a German soldier executing civilians, any back story behind it?
Systematic executions of civilians (non-jews included) in Poland, IIRC. [editline]29th May 2012[/editline] Holy fuck, go to mass debate to talk about this, sweet christ no one really cares what you godforsaken opinion is on the war.

Wow what a shitstorm from one harmless image. [editline]29th May 2012[/editline]
[editline]29th May 2012[/editline] Quite a persecution complex you got there. There is a long list of reasons to dislike the conduct of the American military and government, people aren't just making up things to hate on poor little persecuted U.S
Well I never said that, I just think it's sort of weird for people to get worked up into a big piss because of an image honoring a dead soldier. Also I don't think it's hero worship. Of course this is just my opinion.
this is exactly what I'm talking about can you actually not perceive a difference between a citizen of a country and the country itself?
Oh my god, stop fucking talking, jesus christ
What's with all the hate? It's the last pic of Tupac before he got shot.
Just because you disagree with someones cause, means, morals or method does not mean they cannot be respected. I hate Thatcher but I respect that she has a back bone. I don't agree with Isreali-US foreign policy but I do respect how thousands of its citizens are willing to put their lives on the line for it. The same applies to Al-Quaeda or the Taliban. Rine end here
