Why do we even make these sort of things? A last-generation missile that has the power of twenty-five Hiroshima-style weapons? One of those alone would take out half the planet. It's absurd that we even make these sort of things.

That's the whole point of a deterrent and MAD.
One of those alone would take out half the planet.
Yeah, no.
Oradour Sur glane Oradour was a small town in the Middle of France during the 2nd world war. While the Germans occupied France, this city got slaughtered by the Waffen-SS (642 dead, 6 survivors). Why? 1: 2 german officers got kidnapped and killed, of which one was a friend of officer Dickman, who lead the massacre. 2: they wanted to show that you must show respect to the Nazis And worst of all, it actually was the wrong city. They got confused with the names and just chose this one. First, the city got surrounded by the germans, which then all closed in the inhabitants to the main square, where the men, women and children got seperated before being killed. The men got send to warehouses and other buildings in which they got the bullet. The women and children got forced into the church, where the Germans placed a crate with 2 wires leading outside. The crate was filled with suffocating gas grenades which got detonated. After that, the Nazis started lobbing in normal grenades, shooting anyone who stood up, and finally blew up the roof of the church. After all that, the city was set ablaze. Today, the city still remains, and is free to public to look around. There's also a museum next to it, which explains exactly how it happened. [t]http://tangonotturno.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/dsc05806.jpg[/t] I went there during my vacation to France from which I just returned. It obviously wasn't any fun in there. Inside the ruins of the church you could see (atleast I think they were) some of the bullet holes.
25x hiroshima is considered ordinary for nuclear weapons we've tested bigger ones than that and the mojave desert is still intact
The Soviets tested on that was 50MT, which is 2500x more powerful than the ones dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Looks like we're still here. Fun fact, the Tsar Bomb was the cleanest nuclear device in history. using 97% of it's mass as energy. Fat Boy and Little boy only used <10%
Fun fact, the Tsar Bomb was the cleanest nuclear device in history. using 97% of it's mass as energy. Fat Boy and Little boy only used <10%
In relative proportions, maybe. In absolute terms, not so much.
In relative proportions, maybe. In absolute terms, not so much.
...What. It didn't release much radioactive material because it used it all, so it was clean.
I thought I'd just put this here: these are not individual missiles, they all come from one peacekeeper missile. It is called a MIRV, it launches multiple (up to 12) nuclear warheads from one single missile. this is from wikipedia: Testing of the Peacekeeper re-entry vehicles, all eight (twelve capable) fired from only one missile. Each line represents the path of a warhead which, if it were live, would detonate with the explosive power of twenty-five Hiroshima-style weapons. What makes this even more scary is that if one missile is able to launch up to 12 nuclear warheads, the amount of destruction and annihilation that would be unleashed if the USA would decide to fire more than one missile, there would be absolutely nothing left of this planet. Also you have to keep in mind that this is last generation stuff, now we have even more powerful missiles and warheads..
I suppose that weapon wouldn't actually make peace...
I suppose that weapon wouldn't actually make peace...
No, it keeps the peace because of MAD. Besides, the bombs dropped on Japan made peace and avoided a costly invasion.
And also killed many many innocent people.
Some would argue that the Pacific theater would have been lost to the allies without the detonation.
And also killed many many innocent people.
Had we invaded , the amount of lives lost was estimated to reach over a million, double if not triple had we not dropped the bombs
I thought they were already on the border of surrender prior to those nukes being dropped?
I thought they were already on the border of surrender prior to those nukes being dropped?
Not really. After the first bomb was dropped though, the Japanese told the US that they might surrender, but they would need to discuss it first. The yanks didn't understand and though they said 'no surrender'.
I thought they were already on the border of surrender prior to those nukes being dropped?
i don't think you understand just how fanatical and delusional the japanese were, especially during the twilight of the war if you've watched the scene in Downfall where hitler thinks he can still win the war even when the soviets are on berlin's doorstep, it's like that except they were speaking japanese
I thought they were already on the border of surrender prior to those nukes being dropped?
This link should explain a little bit of how much they weren't going to surrender http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_holdout
No, it keeps the peace because of MAD. Besides, the bombs dropped on Japan made peace and avoided a costly invasion.
MAD? Also that image was posted before.
MAD? Also that image was posted before.
Mutually Assured Destruction or something like that.
MAD?
Mutually-Assured Destruction
MAD? Also that image was posted before.
It just means if two enemies hold WMD's and one uses them, the other will in defence, and there will be no winner
I don't know about you guys, but I'd really love to see a topic for stuff like this. I mean the DUGA-3 stuff, atomic bomb testing and so on. I'm not really a person that's too interested in history nor in wars, but learning on how far mankind can push stuff like this just amazes me.
Well, I guess now is a good time to ask. Thanks to only getting one vote for what to do next, it's abandoned and creepy places. Now, the question is: Would you rather one massive dump, or about one a day for quite a while? Thing is, we might as well use this thread until it dies. Sure, the title will be misleading, but not many photos do shake the world. Maybe if we ask a mod nicely, we could get the thread name changed.
I read every post in this thread. What happened to me.
1981 is a year of assasination attempts. President Reagan survives in January. The Pope survives in May. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat is murdered in October.
I read every post in this thread. What happened to me.
Try reading it while listening to dramatic/sad music.
Some would argue that the Pacific theater would have been lost to the allies without the detonation.
Weren't the Allies actually on Japan's doorstep by the time the bombs were dropped? The battle of Okinawa finished around halfway through June '45 IIRC.

Screw it, I'm bored, and people liked the quick write up I did of DUGA-3. I'm getting to work on a piece you'll all find interesting. So, pull up a chair and grab some tea. This will be good.
Nice to see this thread still going, I might get a few more pictures for you cats.
