I don't think this is the catgirl thread.
Kowloon's walled city. A city that was dead to the world for 30 years. Originally a military fort, build for the Chinese, it became an enclave after new territories were leased to Britain in 1898. The population increased massively during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War 2. At the end of World War 2, China retook Kowloon from the Japanese, and thousands of squatters took advantage of the Chinese protectorate and lived with complete governmental protection. In 1948, the British went to clear the area but failed, and Britain adopted a "Hands-off" policy concerning the city. They allowed the city to be, but at the expense of losing all government services, including: Police, electricity, ambulances, fire brigades, water, postal services and the like. The city thrived on the anarchy that ensued.
For 30 years, the city had explosive growth with both population and square footage. The city was .01 square miles, but housed around 33,000 people. This made it the most densely populated area in history. A private legion of often unaccredited doctors tended to the population, 12 storey buildings rose to the sky without planning and untaxed businesses cropped up in the dark corners. The citizens even made their own water supplies and power grids. It worked partially. There was no law in the city, so drug dens were everywhere, prostitution rings were run openly and gambling dens were commonplace. In the city, you were the one in control, not the government. The most shocking thing is the city didn't implode on itself. Though, after 30 years, the Chinese government eventually though that having the walled city wasn't a good thing to have near Hong Kong and tore it down to build a park. To this day, only the yamen building and remnants of the south gate are preserved.

holy shit
Damn, Kowloon looks fucking cool and I'm surprised it didn't just turn into pure anarchy in there.
Looks like the world in the distant future.
I knew Kowloon was like an urban sprawl, but damn, I didn't think it looked like that on the outside.
Damn, Kowloon looks fucking cool and I'm surprised it didn't just turn into pure anarchy in there.
It's almost like it turned into an agreement between everyone just to not kill each other.
I think the city and the scenario reminds me of District 9.
It also shows that an area without political stability doesn't have to collapse into chaos.
It also shows that an area without political stability doesn't have to collapse into chaos.
But i wonder how it would look if it was'nt eventually demolished.
But i wonder how it would look if it was'nt eventually demolished.
It was run by Triads, so I guess it would depend on the leader. Buildings were extended, so maybe they could have made more buildings. Though, obviously not safe ones.
And also killed many many innocent people.
There's no difference between the life of a soldier and the life of an "innocent". The invasion would've cost millions more in casualties, as well as (something that matters to Americans more) the lives of american soldiers.
Isn't there a similar building block filled with gypsies? I remember seeing it once, it looked really dark but cool
It also shows that an area without political stability doesn't have to collapse into chaos.
it was ruled by triads which were de facto governments, usually at war with each other
Dropbox is acting up for me, and the page already has one of my larger posts on it. So, enjoy this little tidbit.
"Oh, I see you've made another one of you delightful posts that me and a few others do enjoy. So, Madnath, what do you have for us today?"
Today? Today, I have this:

"My, it's only a cathedral! Surely you jest, Madnath! Or have you blundered once again?"
Neither, actually. This is the Sedlec Ossuary, in the Czech Republic. What's so people about this place?
It's estimated to contain the skeletons of between 40,000 and 70,000 people. Of course, they had a brilliant idea of what to do with the massive amount of skeletons.
They decided to use the bones as simple decorations.
Things like enormous chandelier made out of at least every bone in the human body, a coat of arms made with bones, hell, even František Rint, the man who made all of this, left his signature in bones.
It's scary, but damn, it looks cool.

I do have to admit though, it does look cool, if not mildly disturbing at the same time.

Imagine archaeologists finding that buried a few centuries from now. What must they think of us?
I really want to visit that, really interested on the history and all that jaz.
I wonder if anyone who was building that place was like 'shit, we're a shin short. grab the hacksaw, time to donate.'

Totally fucking bitching.
A 2 meter and 28 centimeter long Halibut caught. (Might be around 150 kilos)

173 people died and 414 people were wounded as a result of the bushfires.
Its unbelievable that the cause of some of the fires were arson, and that people actually were scummy enough to loot the remains.
Also this image of Sam the Koala, that became fairly known in Australia.

Australia is a big country, but there's not many people. Everyone here in Vic knew, or knows, someone who got caught in the fires. I knew a bloke who got killed, not a nice affair.
[editline]24th August 2012[/editline]
Also: it wasn't the fires that killed the most, but the heat wave that preceded them. Houses would catch alight as people were packing up to leave while the flames were still kilometers away, catching the people inside.

I was almost caught in the fires, because I was on holiday when it began.
Luckily I managed to leave before it got close.
Also - proportionately, if it was in the US, and if adjusted for population, it would've killed or injured 8086 people/

I lived directly between the three fires in the Dandenongs, one of them was about 30 mins away from my school at one point. There were a couple of kids that hang around at the train station claiming they did it, but I think that's because they wanted to look hardcore. It was pretty bad, whenever you walked outside everything was tinted yellow from nearby smoke.
