That's horrible.
‘THE HELL DEATH” The garrote very common once, is no longer sanctioned by law in any country though training in its use is still carried out in the French Foreign Legion. The garrote is a device that strangles a person to death. It can also be used to break a person’s neck. The device was used in Spain until it was outlawed in 1978 with the abolition of the death penalty. It normally consisted of a seat in which the prisoner was restrained while the executioner tightened a metal band around his neck until he died. Some versions of the garrote incorporated a metal bolt which pressed in to the spinal chord, breaking the neck. The victim may pass into a state of severe and painful convulsions and then pass into death. This spiked version is known as the Catalan garrote. The last execution by garrote was José Luis Cerveto in October 1977. Andorra was the last country in the world to outlaw its use, doing so in 1990. However garroting is still common in India according Indian author and forensic expert Parikh.

They disliked each other before WW2 anyway.
It probably the heat of the war itself that brought the two countries together. After the war it seems most of that was forgotten.
Possibly the most famous body on Everest is that of “Green Boots,” an Indian climber named Tsewang Paljor. Paljor was a Constable with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police who took his last breath on the 10th of May during the famous 1996 Mount Everest Disaster. Paljor was part of a three-man group that was attempting to be the first Indian team to ascend Mt. Everest from the Northeastern route. The weather that season was worse than other years and 1996 proved to be one of the deadliest seasons for Mount Everest climbers. When the storm rolled in, visibility went to zero and the temperature dropped considerably. Separated from the climbers in his group and suffering from the cold, Paljor found a small cave and huddled inside for protection from the elements. Little did he know that would be his resting place for the next 15 years.
Here's an intresting read about people that have died while trying to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
Ki Suk Han pushed onto NYC Subway track and killed
Wow. How many people did this have to go through to get published, disgusting. Clear sensationalism and trying to wring cash from a man's death.
Gonna repost some photos in this thread and try and get a revival going [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1a/LeonardGSiffleet.jpg[/t] Gonna try and dig up some photos from Leningrad later.

pardon my lack of information, I'm not north american, what did the unknown soldier do?
pardon my lack of information, I'm not north american, what did the unknown soldier do?
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, is a memorial to soldiers which had died in battle and their remains were found, but the remains remain unidentifiable. The reason why the guards walk the matt is for these reasons:
There is a meticulous routine which the guard follows when watching over the graves:[23] The soldier walks 21 steps across the Tomb. This alludes to the twenty-one gun salute,[24] which is the highest honor given to any military or foreign dignitary in America. His weapon is always on the shoulder opposite the Tomb (i.e., on the side of the gallery watching the ritual). On the 21st step, the soldier turns and faces the Tomb for 21 seconds. The soldier then turns to face the other way across the Tomb and changes his weapon to the outside shoulder. After 21 seconds, the first step is repeated. This is repeated until the soldier is relieved of duty at the Changing of the Guard. The mat is usually replaced twice per year: before Memorial Day and before Veterans Day. This is required because of the wear on the rubber mat by the special shoes worn by Tomb Guards. The sentinels have metal plates built into the soles and inner parts of their shoes to allow for a more rugged sole and to give the signature click of the heel during maneuvers. The sentinels wear sunglasses because of the bright reflection from the marble surrounding the Tomb and the Memorial Amphitheater. On the ground not covered by the mat, a wear pattern in the tile can be seen that corresponds to the precise steps taken during the changing of the guard. On the mat itself, footprints worn in by standing guard are also visible.

pardon my lack of information, I'm not north american, what did the unknown soldier do?
It's a tomb dedicated to US soldiers who were killed in action but their remains weren't identifiable.
pardon my lack of information, I'm not north american, what did the unknown soldier do?
A lot of countries other than the US have the same type of memorial btw.
It's a tomb dedicated to US soldiers who were killed in action but their remains weren't identifiable.
No, it's dedicated to fallen soldiers in general.
A lot of countries other than the US have the same type of memorial btw.
Canada's got one too in front of our National War Memorial. As far as I can tell, we also have the mats.
Jesus, I didn't know he was that short.
That's why it was such a scandal to the Japanese. He looked so damn short compared to MacArthur. Anyways, we just passed the 95th Anniversary of the Halifax Explosion yesterday (I was actually thinking of posting a Halifax Explosion photo yesterday and hadn't even realized it was the anniversary. How weird!) so here's a photo!

While not enough of the ship is intact to judge the exact location, its effects are indisputable. About seven seconds after the hit, the forward magazines detonated in a cataclysmic explosion, mostly venting through the sides of the ship and destroying much of the interior structure of the forward part of the ship. This caused the forward turrets and conning tower to collapse downward some 25–30 feet (7.6–9.1 m) and the foremast and funnel to collapse forward.[47] The explosion killed 1,177 of the 1,512 crewmen on board at the time, over half of the lives lost during the attack.[21] It touched off fierce fires that burned for two days; debris showered down on Ford Island in the vicinity. The blast from this explosion also put out fires on the repair ship Vestal, which was moored alongside.[48]
I've been to the Arizona memorial, pretty humbling experience. Theres still oil that leaks from the ship and still makes it to the surface.
So my history teacher said if you look closely on one photo of pearl harbor you can see people flying in the air. I mean like bodies.
I love history so much, thank you all for this thread just existing.
