It would be interesting to see a graph also of the average cost of outfitting a soldier over time increasing.

That picture is absolutely scary as fuck for me, because my dad was a navigator in the Navy on an EP2E during Vietnam, and got shot down three times, twice behind enemy lines and once in Cambodia. He still has flashbacks even though he denies it.

The first sentence of your post in combination to the image looking shopped made me rate your post funny. Sorry for being disrespectful.
It represents what bomber wing they were in. Apparently those B-29's were with the 313th bomber wing, 9th BG.

Was watching Platoon tonight, and I had another little "click" as I usually do watching wars-of-years-past movies. What did these guys have to protect themselves? Nothing but a piece of steel on their heads until the ~90s. Just, shit man.. knee deep in mud and blood wearing not much more than a dress shirt and slacks, boots and helmet, maybe a jacket? Soldiers these days are lucky :v:

They had flak jackets to wear since WW2. It could cover them from grenade shrapnel and sometimes bullets

It was by far the worst job on a B-17. You didn't get a parachute because it was too cramped in there, you had no access to getting inside of the B-17. So if it got shot down you had to make a choice, you either jump out and fall to your death, or you wait inside the ball and get crushed.
Theres an old story about a B-17, it was heavily wounded when it was returning from a mission, and it couldn't deploy it's landing gear. So it had to do a crash landing on the runway, which meant the ball gunner got crushed upon landing.
Anyway, I got more pictures of WWII aircraft if you guys want me to post them.

The turrets tended to break after taking the normal amount of flack fire B-17's did

Plus it would be really tough to maneuver to try and get inside. The turret could be jettisoned, but it took around 20 minutes to do it, and it was typically impossible with a wounded crew and failing engines.

Logically, a guy willing to get into and control that thing would be physically unable to, what with each of his testicles being roughly the same size as the fucker and all.
PBY Catalina, Saudi Arabia.
In 1960, Thomas Kendall, his family, and a photographer from Life magazine set off on a round the world pleasure trip in this Catalina.
On 22nd March they touched down in the Gulf of Aqaba.
The following day they were attacked with automatic gun fire from a headland nearby by local people who had mistaken them for Israeli commandos.
Mr Kendall and his secratary were injured. After interrogation in Jeddah they were all released.
Less than a century later, another group convenes to discuss the fate of a defeated German Empire after the First World War in the very same hall. Note Woodrow Wilson in the center.

My granddad was a belly-turret gunner in a B-17. I never knew that's how they operated them.
I remember my dad asking my grandfather if he was any good at being a gunner and he replied "I got shot down three times. I guess not."
I never met that grandfather, though I wish I did.
