Pacific would be a nice start. Maybe around Tarawa, Guadel canal, or Okinawa. My grandfather served there and he's supposedly in a few pictures from there.

When the next page comes about, may I do a Vietnam War photo dump?
just do it now the page number doesn't matter and it doesn't matter if it's "page king" or not. If you have pictures to post just post them.
If you can, bold a tagline for when it goes in a set.

And don't forget to thumbnail, please.
These are all from a link I attempted to post a while back, but the site was broken, but I was recently able to find them again. Here we go.

I feel like throwing up every time I see these photos. The lack of context behind them is disgusting, and the amount of people that believe that the South Vietnamese general there is executing a civilian is saddening. The General in this photo moved to the US after the war and opened a restaurant apparently, when it leaked out that he was the man in this photo the public destroyed his restaurant.

the apallo Command module was humanity's first true spaceship, it contained living space, batteries, computer guidance systems, communication systems, fuel, manuvering and main engine, along with the life support systems. before, the gemini capsuls and Mercury capsils were one shots, not able to really stray off their main corse, apallo 13 prooved this thing's strength
Here are a few websites good for photos:
In Focus, the atlantic. Weekly photos, that goes from everday life to Afghanistan. Very good quality also.
http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/
The Big Picture. Pretty much the same as In Focus.
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/
http://militaryphotos.net/. Pictures of daily military photos, and also alot of other rare military photos (ww2 etc.)

While were on the topic of vietnam and aviation, my best buddy's grandfather was a dust off pilot, and one time he was told not to go save a group of guys who were pinned because the area was too hot, but he went against orders anyways and got them, and returned to tell the tale with a Huey smoking, running on fumes and full of bullet holes.
Unfortunately, I dont have a photo of it v:v:v
Being vietnamese, seeing dead civilians makes me incredibly sad although I've seen all those pictures hundreds of times.

You can actually drink alcohol in the military as long as it's on base IIRC.

[sp]Shima Hospital. Rebuilt in it's exact location- the hypocenter of the Hiroshima atomic bombing.[/sp]
I've been there, it was weird because the street looks so average and boring. There's just a plaque saying were the bomb hit.
I've been there too. Hiroshima is a very nice city. Exiting the A-Bomb museum is almost a surreal feeling. Like that this city is nice, and the museum teaches you so much, but the city where the tradgedy happened is... Somewhere else.
There was this one section. A hallway. In it was filled with wax statues of people with their skin melting, sliding off the bone. That day (present time) an elementary school took a field trip to the museum. The kids looked at the statue and made a face and kind of laughed and ran off- in an innocent child-like kind of way. They were too young to understand. The kids couldn't understand the context of that person depicted. The more I think about it though... who would want to?
Sorry for droning on. It's a very powerful place is all.

What we would have done would have been far worse. A full scale invasion of the island with a projected 1.25 million casualties or so on our side in just the first 3 months. Just about every civilian would have fought back in some way. It would have been a complete genocide, we would have wiped out most of the population from Japan. While I hate that we used nukes, what would have happened if we didn't would have been worse.
My granddad was a belly-turret gunner in a B-17. I never knew that's how they operated them.

Here's a poem for you that I remembered, that I'm sure some of you have read:
From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,
I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.

Another thing to keep in mind, there are less soldiers than the previous era. So the cost almost balances out, going with quality instead of quantity.
