This is supposedly the last photo ever taken of Frau Rosa Luxemburg. At least, a photo of her alive. Taken some time before her murder by Freikorps volunteers, it is one of few actual photos of her.

George Mallory was one of the first to attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1924, he set off but was never heard of since.
In 1999 his body was found - 75 years later. His name tag on his shirt preserved and reading his name.

It's really crazy how many people don't realize how deadly it is up there People die every day, and a lot of them aren't recovered, and just end up getting mummified and preserved to stay forever.
Not earth-shaking, just... cool.

[QUOTE=Desert Rat;39264639]While were on the topic of vietnam and aviation, my best buddy's grandfather was a dust off pilot, and one time he was told not to go save a group of guys who were pinned because the area was too hot, but he went against orders anyways and got them, and returned to tell the tale with a Huey smoking, running on fumes and full of bullet holes.

His name is Glen P. York, he got the Air Force Cross for his bravery. He saved a man named Duthy. Duthy's unit thought he died, so every time they'd go drinking, they'd have a drink for Duthy. Only recently they found out Duthy's still alive.

He did it because in the past, a similar situation happened. I don't know the full story, but some Army aircraft was shot down. He wasn't deployed to rescue the crew because some high-ranking Army officer said "We take care of our own", and refused help from the Airforce. Well, the crew of that aircraft never got the help it needed. My granddad refused to ever let that happen again.

It gotta suck. The last thing you see is a huge smoke mushroom and then all that heat coming at your face.

Actually, you'd just see an incredible light before you. Then nothing. You'd probably think you're dead first.
You would think they'd have the common sense to close your eyes, cover them with you hands and turn away

It doesn't really occur from staring at the fire, it comes from the initial flash. If you're close enough for it to burn your eyes out, you won't have enough time to turn away.
