Platoon isnt really near a hyper realistic portrayal if being in vietnam. Apocalypse Now and Platoon is about in the same arena of being realistic. We Were Soldiers is about as realistic as any movie I have saw. That being said I was never in the vietnam conflict so what do i know.
Read the second paragraph of my post again. The realism I'm talking about is in the technical details. But also, Platoon is adapted straight from Oliver Stone's (the director) own experience in Vietnam as an infantryman. Apoc Now on the other hand is an adaption of the Novella "Heart of Darkness". It's intended to play out like bad acid trip. We were soldiers was realistic yeah, but I disliked the over the top editing and special effects, but that's a given with modern films. I'm a fan of the older days when special effects were largely organic.
I watched this movie every day for 2 months. I re-wrote it in the point of view of Sgt. Elias
