But that's not even why I think it is bad. I'm used to listening to things that may not be traditionally "enjoyable," but I just don't see much original or interesting in the song. tbh I don't think people would be defending this song as much if it wasn't by an already popular band.
I was more referring to the rhetoric that a good song has to be enjoyable. Whether or not you find the political discourse interesting or not is a different topic, though I do agree it is pretty par for the course especially for a group as talented as Gorillaz.
It seems a lot more like an art piece or political statement than a song to be enjoyed, not that there's anything wrong with that.
The two things aren't mutually exclusive, that's no excuse
This isn't really that experimental though is the thing. It is outside of their usual style, but a lot of artists have executed better stuff in a similar vein in the past.
I think you're missing the point. Gorillaz doesn't have a "usual style".
This is fucking great, totally locks me into the same vibes as Cloud of Unknowing did when I first heard it. Gorillaz is one of those bands that I genuinely can't name one bad song by them. Either the immediately click with me, or I dont like a song at first but then I warm up to it due to listening with a different perspective or mood.

Except White Flag, I'm still pretty conflicted about it.

this is freaking cool
sweepstakes
Never forgive.
Seeing this made me wonder why I never bothered to listen to any Gorillaz albums before, considering I'd liked pretty much everything I'd heard from them, so I'm working on that now. Pretty good stuff.
Not crazy about the featured vocalist but the bit with Damon is classic Gorillaz.
Gave it a second listen too just now after listening to it for the first time a few days ago. I like it more than I did the first time but it's still not the level I've come to expect from Gorillaz.
I didn't like it at first either but now I'm listening to it multiple times a day lol [editline]24th January 2017[/editline] I think I would like the song a lot better if it was entirely in 4/4 time. It just sounds really off when it's in 3/4 for some reason
sweepstakes
Sweepstakes is easily one of my favorite songs on the album, I love putting it on at a party and just going hard. It follows just behind To Binge and Some Kind of Nature, on my list [editline]27th January 2017[/editline]
Seeing this made me wonder why I never bothered to listen to any Gorillaz albums before, considering I'd liked pretty much everything I'd heard from them, so I'm working on that now.
I think you're missing the point. Gorillaz doesn't have a "usual style".
I'd disagree there. Although they blend a lot of styles, their usual style is somewhere between alt-rock and hip-hop.
