Then ask for their profile url, not their username. Your steam username is something you need to keep a secret as that's what you use to login.
Why would the username be a secret?
this thread turned into something pants-on-head retarded all because of nearly two pages worth of replies that have nothing to do with the op blue kirby i think you were better off getting the web api and putting one of those "log in from steam" things on your site, and processing everything with that.
If steam support won't unban you, you should contact someone from Valve specifically and explain the situation. I've found that to work in solving a lot of problems. As for the Steam/Origin debate going on here, take it somewhere else (How about the debating section? -.-).
Let me guess........your username is "mobrockers"? Oh man, I must have hacked your account Profile url ends in the username, does it not?
Um, no. That's called a custom URL. [editline]8th December 2011[/editline]
Why would the username be a secret?
People not knowing your username is just safer. If you don't tell them your username (and don't keep your steam name the same as your username), there's not way anyone can get access to your steam account. Ever. Besides, you don't need their username to be able to add them on steam.

Knowing someones login username and email address is just enough to phish an account. Not everyone uses Steam Guard. And no my Steam Community URL isn't the same and I could change it at anytime. Also there are people with email addresses used for their login username.
There's also Steam Guard.
Changing the words does not make it any less true? Seriously, what is the point you're trying to make?
Email gabe! EMAIL THE GABE!
Seems like the guy was just being black and white about it, unfortunately you're always going to come across people like that.
Send an email to Gabe. I'm sure he'll sort it all out.
People who contacted EA for swearing got pretty much told off. They even banned this guy because he got swored at on the forums. Contacting support, they said he can't even play singleplayer games anymore. This guy I know too, got banned, asked in support, they literally had the fucking gut to tell him to go away, that they don't want his business. Yes, Origin/EA fucking sucks. Steam is way better.
Oh god.... battlelog [editline]8th December 2011[/editline]
Email gabe! EMAIL THE GABE!
Thats the cool thing about steam. The CEO is actually a cool enough guy he will read and respond to people's emails at a pretty good rate. I don't think I would ever be able to send an email to EA's or any other company and get a response. Now, watch my BF3 account get banned "automatically" by EA.
