Surely somebody has an alternative to YouTube? Why is there zero competition? I really don't understand. I would be willing to switch sites, YouTube sucks for users and it sucks for producers, so what is stopping somebody from doing things right? [editline]1st September 2016[/editline] DailyMotion just seems like such a half-assed messy website honestly.
Youtube isn't profitable for google iirc but they eat the cost for some reason.
youtube... more like "be-what-we-want-you-to-be-tube"
There, that is yourmovesucks.
How the fuck are they going to put this in place without fucking themselves over? YouTube relies heavily on popular channels like PewDiePie, and while it's been years since I've watched one of his videos, I distinctly remember him cursing. A lot.
-huge twitter pic i can't downsize naturally-
The millions of videos they'd have to 'censor' / screw over on this sort of stuff is ridiculous. I guess that means World War II and Vietnam War history aficionados aren't allowed to monetize their videos anymore.
Even Kurzgesagt got at least one video demonetized by this change- is YouTube really that desperate to "sanitize" the site? Seems like all they're doing is pissing people off and installing a form of censorship-lite.

So apparently "Team Youtube" on Twitter just gave a half-assed response to DeFranco's attempts to get them to be honest about what's going on. Time to grab the popcorn.

This is what happens when information is controlled by the self-regulating private sector

I don't get it, are they pretending all they did was add a notification process which somehow got rid of monetization on a bunch of videos, or are they saying they won't change their mind about their ridiculous conditions?
Pretty much explains the situation.
I wonder if this has something to do with youtube backstage they are rumored to be implementing where uses can share photos, polls, links, and text post to subscribers.
So they're pretty much re-adding what you were able to do back in 06 or 08 before YouTube revamped profile layouts after Google bought them out.
I dont understand why the fuck youtube is doing this. Youtube needs to understand that a large chunk of their watchers are teens, young adults, people in their twenties, and thirties. But somehow is trying to gear it towards children and trying to make it more family friendly. Go make a fucking alternative website like youtube.Kids or Youtube.Family. Something else so the rest of us dont have to deal with this horseshit.

Kurzgesagt, one of the best content creators on YouTube right now imo, got demonetized for talking about nuclear energy?? The site is in a freefall with all major creators screaming bloody murder and their response is "nothing is happening".
how about they start shutting down actual shtty channels instead coughleafyisherecoughcough
i will end you Just kiddin. In all seriousness, I was planning to try for a career on YT- But i'm starting to reconsider now
The owners of Patreon are going to have a field day with this.
Well, this is going to be an entertaining roller coaster. We're gonna get some royal assblastin' from most big channels now :v:
here, http://www.dailymotion.com/us It would be easier to get them to fix daily motion to be how youtubers want it to be than youtube to fix it and keep where they were.
Dailymotion is kinda ehh. The most competant alternative to youtube that exists right now is probably vimeo, it has a good player too that's leagues above youtube's [sp]though, that's a really low bar.[/sp] But no migration will happen unless youtube REALLY fucks up, even this probably wouldn't be enough, people are just too locked in.

Not just talking about size-wise either, the kind of content they encourage most isn't what pops up on most peoples YouTube feeds.
A company like this can't try to appeal to everyone, which is what they're trying to do right now. And I mean that literally. You, by all means, cannot appeal to everyone when you have a site where people are supposed to be able to upload videos about what they want, how they want. They're trying to make the entire site a family friendly baby-sitter, so that they can cash out more, advertise more, and in the end make more money. That's all it comes down to, and as long as YouTube is making more money, or pulling the big MMM as I like to call it, nothing matters. This is a much more dangerous, thin line than I ever have seen before though. Instead of pulling something that's just going to help them rake up more cash like they have many times before, they're being really risky. They're pulling something that means a major amount of the people they rely on to help rake in that cash will no longer be able to pull in that cash for them, after having a majority of videos taken down, censored, and possibly even removing monetizing options for the channel. YouTubers will get angry and leave. It's like they imagined that as soon as this rolled out, the big YouTubers would go "Wowee, what an exciting new way to help my pal YouTube make a dandy profit!", and immediately delete any and all "guideline breaking" videos, and convert their channels to mindless, opinion-less mush within seconds. Because this plan is only something that might (and that's a very, very strong might) work in a long term plan, where all the old YouTubers are phased out, or they phase out their own content, and replace it with YouTube's new idea of the "ideal YouTuber and content", which is just utterly fucking ridiculous.
Vimeo isn't really a website on the same level as YouTube though. Not just talking about size-wise either, the kind of content they encourage most isn't what pops up on most peoples YouTube feeds.
I've been trying my hand at animation and Vimeo seems to have a lot better community around animation then Youtube (or at least higher quality). Not to say there isn't great animators on Youtube but they often get drowned out in a sea of sub-par quality animations that get a million views because they reference or parody something current and then die out really quick. It discourages doing quality animation for a living because it's quicker to make "MEME PARODY 2014" and get a few hundred thousand clicks from average janes and joes who don't know what adblock is vs spending weeks or even months on a frame by frame animation you pour your soul into. That being said Vimeo isn't perfect either, there's a limit to what you can upload unless you pay to upgrade your account and the lesser restrictions while giving more freedom does result in a fair bit of soft-core porn getting uploaded. I guess it's also an upside too since raising the bar of entry tends to raise the quality of content AND make getting funds to improve the service easier. (on a side note on the porn thing, I once found a channel by some rich Russian guy who hires models to do non-sexual stuff in his house naked or semi-naked, it was filmed on a gopro and had a really creepy peep show vibe to it :ohno:) [editline]1st September 2016[/editline] Now that I think about it, I could use this to my advantage, the young children market on Youtube is massive and filled with adbait content, maybe I should invest some time into making quality videos for young children?
Controversial topics. For Sonic Adventure 2. This is worse than I thought.
Pretty sure it's a joke.
I feel like this might be an easier battle than the "Where's The Fair Use" situation, since it has more to do with YouTube's service than other people's intellectual properties, and them removing ad revenue from "inappropriate" channels will affect them greatly. All we might have to do is just rant a lot, bring it to everyone's attention and wait until YouTube realizes they're screwing themselves over by removing monetization from their big content creators. Of course, I would like to see in the future a sort of YouTube blackout happen. Where big daily content creators in mass agree for a whole week or so to simply not upload to YouTube over a terrible policy/practice. But that's pretty much never going to happen as long as people choose to depend on YouTube to provide money for their living expenses.
This guy was like, one of the very, very first you tubers who got big, wasn't he? I remember watching him in middle school when he had the stock garageband video intro.
