So is this the game they said it was supposed to be F2P? Or is there something else in the making?
So is this the game they said it was supposed to be F2P? Or is there something else in the making?
Project Reality 2 was supposed to be free on the Cryengine, made by a different team, but that project is dead.
How is Squad more public friendly than Arma3? Did you actually play the game to know that?
ARMA 3 is a simulator, Squad is not, it's just going for a realistic non-arcade-like approach. I think they've also said they want the gameplay to be somewhere between Insurgency and ARMA 3.
I'll be honest, you could have told me the gameplay was ARMA III at medium settings and I would have believed you.
How is Squad more public friendly than Arma3? Did you actually play the game to know that?
For one, they actually have a Team vs Team gamemode out of the box that is playable on public servers. I'm mainly basing this on my experience with Project Reality since Squad's game mode and mechanics are very similar. The objectives in PR/Squad are much more straightforward and easier to understand than all the weird modes on ArmA 3's public servers while still encouraging players to work together to accomplish them. I do like ArmA 3 in an organized environment, but sometimes it's too much of a hassle to wait for the missions to be set up and planned and depending on the mission, online performance can be atrocious. Project Reality/Squad is much easier and faster to jump in and have some level of teamwork and coordination that isn't found in Battlefield or Insurgency. I really just want Project Reality without the limitations of the BF2 engine. I can't stand PR's cone deviation and I'm hoping that Squad has much better shooting mechanics since they have more control by using UE4
yeah I'll be more impressed when they show the 'large' scale that they had in PR. right now it's just insurgency 2.0 also really disliking that some weapons don't have sights on them. Nearly every weapon now has some sort of magnification sight on it
The two maps in the game are already 2km square IIRC, already a number of times larger than any Insurgency map. Also if I'm not mistaken, they've got humvees in or are about to, with more vehicles to come
While they are at nearly 100k with 30 days to go. I really don't see what they will bring to the table that hasn't been done already.

It's a game running on a horrendously outdated engine, the idea's to make a successor without all the shit that bogs PR down.
I don't know, that's what I was saying?
Well yeah, it's like asking what any sequel does that hasn't been done before.
This campaign is pretty poorly thought out. They're low-balling the amount people will pay towards a 'funded' goal, hoping people will work towards the stretch goals. Bad idea. The average person doesn't pledge to a project if it's already "funded", which is going to hurt them. For a team of people who need wages, living expenses, and dev costs paid for over a year ~$150k won't help much. The fact that their 'timeline' is a line with no times is also worrying. Listing dev time from "12 - 24 months" shows they really didn't think this through. They'll hit the goal no problem and get a few stretch goals, but they should've asked for more to start with.
Right now, I'm under the impression that they'll eventually get everything in no matter what, the stretch goals are just to get them out at launch or in the early access builds. Once they hit early access and it's available on Steam, they're golden. They just need $150,000 to polish the hell out of this prototype early access build and some additional content. Update: Just got a message back from them, 4-5 maps in the alpha by September and they're only showing off one so far. I'd imagine they've just started on them and they need to finish up some weapons and polish the hell out of this, but that's just for $70+ backers. They'll probably have even more content by the early access release in November/December.
While they are at nearly 100k with 30 days to go. I really don't see what they will bring to the table that hasn't been done already.
It's not trying to, it's meant to be just a better PR without the shackles of the BF2 engine.
If you ever play Arma 2 pub warfare, you're having a really good day if you get to form a small squad of 3 people basically amounting to follow-the-leader Basically, you will probably never convince pubs to "fall back and counter attack". Only about half of the players in your squad will actually respect the fact you're the assigned squad leader, if that's the system in place.
In PR you would.
But to be fair, there's a barrier for entry beyond buying a game. It's not much, but I'm eager to find out how much of a difference that makes. Either way, server owners and communities will have as much control as they do of their servers in PR so shit players will be gone.
I want to play PR but I feel like it's somehow inaccessible to me. I dunno why.
I want to play PR but I feel like it's somehow inaccessible to me. I dunno why.
The community is so tight knit and experienced now, it really is inaccessible at this point. Doesn't help that the base game just feels its age.
It defininitely is harder to get into than most online FPS, since it requires alot of dedication, discipline and commitment, and while it might not suit everyone, it is anything but impossible to get into. There is a very detailed manual, explaining everything you need to know about the rules and you will find that most of the community will gladly help you if you let them know you are new. I doubt that Squad will be any more accessible in that regard, since it will be pretty much the same game as PR, just with less quirks and better performance.
I want to play PR but I feel like it's somehow inaccessible to me. I dunno why.
It hasn't been in my experience. If you rock it as a rifleman, just let whoever's in charge of your squad know that you're new. I'd recommend joining an empty server beforehand, though, just so you can fiddle with your controls. You should definitely test your voice controls first, so that other people can talk you through the rest of the game.
