It's funny how people are arguing about this when it'll very likely have no impact on the subject matter. As in, the US will likely keep "in god we trust" on it's currency for a very long time and there isn't really anything anyone can do about it at this point, so there really isn't that much point in arguing about it in the first place.
Well you're quite the individual aren't you. Just living the average life, without a care in the world.
There is a war going on but who cares right? Not like debating it will bring any change to anything, I mean, why do I need to express and support my views and opinion?
the shield is cool
Who cares what the money says? It could say "Go fuck your mom." and I would use it all the same.
Atheist American OP here. I don't give a fuck if our currency has "In god we trust" embossed on it, we have MUCH bigger problems to worry about.

No you idiot, this is serious fucking business!

You are right! to hell with the war in the middle east and our failing public school system! We need to change the penny NOW before those crazy atheists attack the white house!
I couldn't give two shits if the penny said "I fucked your mom in the ass last night" engraved on it.
Why does America have "In god we trust" on their coins.
That's pretty silly.
English coins mention god on them. What's the big deal?
Liberyy?
You guys get trolled so easily.
There are only twelve stripes on the shield.

There is a difference between bickering and trolling/getting trolled.
There are only twelve stripes on the shield.
No, there are 13.

Lets start by removing that "in god we trust" B.S. - what happened to separation of gov't and religion?
Although I completely agree, They won't do it because for two reasons.
1. It's tradition: It'd be like getting rid of E PLURIBUS UNUM or Apple pie.
2. It's not separate: We'd have gay marriage and abortion, among other controversial things.
I don't understand people who complain about the "in god we trust" type things. I mean, do you just have nothing better to do than bitch and whine about something that has no effect on ANYONE. It's sad really.
I wish they would get rid of them, they are just a complete nuisance...
In case none of you know, "In god we trust" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance and all our money and shit because back in the 50s with the cold war, we wanted us to be distinguished from "them godless commies" as the Soviet Union was an Atheistic state.

actually in the pledge of allegiance it was "under god" which was added, after "One nation" and before "indivisible" (amusingly enough dividing "nation" from "indivisible")

Oh yeah you're right. Sorry about that. I knew that god something was added.

Did anyone else read this as "I've already seen penises"?
Maybe I'm homosexual.

This shall be the final word on the origin of the phrase on the penny
It says in GOD we trust.
Not in Yahweh, not in Allah, not in Vishnu, not in "a god", not in Zues, not in Horace, but in God, the only name for the only Christian god. It is, infact, referring to God of the Christian religion, and is a direct violation of separation of church and state, of a secular state, and of a religion-less state.
Just saying.
Myself being a cashier I've been seeing a shit ton of these lately. I also found a 1915 penny today which was pretty cool.
"In God We Trust" on the money bothers me. It doesn't bother me enough to get me angry and in a heated debate, though.
I'm more bothered by having "-so help your god?" as part of the oath in court. Ironically, if you've got an atheist saying it, you're basically making them lie while swearing to tell the truth. However, it still isn't a huge deal.
I do think that a lot of the people that are on the "who gives a shit?" side of this argument are missing the point. Those on the "get rid of that shit" side of the argument are more against the fact that "In God We Trust" and "one nation, under god" are symbolic of the disregard for the founding principles of the country.
we should not redesign it and just abolish the penny completely
I enjoy it

Implying that the "separation of church and state" wasn't because of problems England had with one of their kings controlling the church.
The real question is, Why does America have 1 cent pieces?
