I have to disagree somewhat; they don't want to believe their friend is a bad person (another example is in rape cases, parents will often still deny it even after conviction,) and there IS problem in this country of police and killing people (and yes, many are justified, but there are many systematic issues.) Something so convenient as your friend simply being among Michael Brown, Walter Scott, etc. will likely jump at them as an explanation.
Makes it kind of creepy for some people in this thread to be using this event to lash at PC culture but meh
