• So apparently it's against the law not to wear a helmet while biking?

I ride after curfew in L.A and on the riverbed without the helmet. Genuine Rebel.
Riding without a helmet is technically illegal around here too, but not enforced and the cops can legally only give you a verbal warning at most. I have never even owned a bicycle helmet (well, since I was five anyways).
I just wear a full-knight armor so I am completely sure that I won't die if a car hits me. I also equip a lance every now and then if I want to battle someone to death on the way to the bus stop.
Only minors are legally required to wear helmets in CA.
Actually i doubt that. Seeing as he "slipped" (by the way you're story is null and void seeing as you weren't "sure on the details") and fell tothe ground, presumable 4-5 feet and died, there was probably an existing condition which provoked the death. You need to really try to get killed by smacking your head on the ground from a small distance.
He cracked his skull open on the curb. A helmet would have stopped that from happening or, at the very least, cushioned the blow and reduced the damage.
[img_thumb]http://imgur.com/3EgKw.jpg[/img_thumb]
I don't know if this has been pointed out yet, but OP left his address, description, age, and high school unblocked. And how the hell do you live in California and not know the helmet law? I thought everyone knew it. White, skinny 15 year olds from Culver City High School are so stupid. From what I can find, his house roughly costs $323,762. It's fairly nice. It last sold Last sold for $250,000 on August 28th, 1997. OP gets his username from the name of his street. OP, how is the Centaur football team this year? How was you school play this past weekend? By the way, you have an emergency drill on December 7th.
But you weren't No matter what you say about this story, you aren't 100% certain on it.
Okay, one: I meant I wasn't sure on how he fell. As in... he may have lost his balance. He may slipped on a wet or icy patch of ground. Two: Why are you trying to argue against wearing helmets anyway?! Where about in your, or anyone else's thick skull does their brain rationalise not wearing a helmet and go, "yeah, that seems perfectly logical and makes sense! Let's NOT wear something that could potentially save our lives!" Why don't we just REMOVE seatbelts and airbags from cars while we're at it? I mean, statistically speaking not that many people out of a given sample size of population get killed in cars so what's the fucking point? This shit is there to PROTECT people. To keep them safe. There's no reason to NOT have it. Best case scenario: bugger all happens and you live your life perfectly fine. Worse case scenario: shit happens and you at least stand a CHANCE of coming out of it alive.
Fuck da poleece I do what I want. Seriously though, just wear a fucking helmet. If you don't you'll really have no one to blame but yourself if you get fucked up in an accident. You don't need to be going fast to get hit by a car that is going fast.
I thought the helmet law was basic knowledge in California. seriously, how the hell did the OP not know about it?
Well, he's not on the football team so we can rule out brain damage.
Well, he's not on the football team so we can rule out brain damage.
I got brain damage from football. :frown:
I agree with the law but not the cop, he shouldn't be ticketing teens. The first time I had this encounter the cop just let me go.
I agree with the law but not the cop, he shouldn't be ticketing teens. The first time I had this encounter the cop just let me go.
cops can pretty much ticket who they want IF there is a valid reason.

why? just why?
I agree with the law but not the cop, he shouldn't be ticketing teens. He was riding one of those small mini-motorcycles and got a ticket for driving it without a license. Had to do several months of community service and pay a fine. They'll get you for anything at any age above 13, really.
I remember I was driving a motorcycle with no papers what so ever or registration without a helmet, the cop let me go because I said I was going cross on it and pointed out all the mud on it :P.(It was a rural area)

But in all seriousness, i see what you mean but i still think that example was a little extreme. Just look at the details here though, a 15 year old kid was riding his bike, maybe like 8 or 9 mph at most is pulled over by a cop and is fined, at minimum, 50$ and is ordered to go to court. He will go to court, the judge will ask for an apology, and they will leave, spending more money because they need a lawyer seeing as it's a city court and not small claims. (The lawyer part i'm not quite sure about however.) While he did break the law, the officer did not need to fine and give the kid a court date.
Cops are just doing their job. Most of them are really nice if you get to know them. They're people too. If they had let you go and just drove past you, not saying anything, they'd get in trouble. If you were a cop, you would do your job correctly. Don't go assuming that the cop was a dick because they gave you a ticket, you were obviously doing something wrong. And if the cop gives you attitude, deal with it. They go through so much shit everyday, let them have their fun and treat them with respect, it'll make you look good. OP is dumb for not knowing basic laws, acting as if the cop was wrong, and posting his ticket with personal info on it online.
Is there are law that requires you to wear helmets when on a bicycle in your country? Haha, outrageous. We only have that for motorized bikes.
Is there are law that requires you to wear helmets when on a bicycle in your country? Haha, outrageous. [editline]17th November 2010[/editline]
Seriously guys, if he wants to kill himself let him. Not make him give money to the fuz in hopes he learns his lesson. Inever were helmets. If a cop pulles me over I would say I have no ID and give him a fake name.
Giving a cop a fake name will get you in some deep shit.
Yeah what an asshole cop, riding a bike without a helmet wont kill you. The ticket was probably for the Mcdonalds you were going to buy though, that shit will kill ya, you'know?
How the hell is that outrageous? It's only for minors, it's for safety.
Well, if it was for little kids, fine. But for other people under 18? Ah, maybe it's just outrageous to me because we don't have that law here. Nevertheless, there are rarely any bicycle accidents over here.
riding a bike without a helmet wont kill you.
Yes it can. EDIT: And to hammer the point home:
http://www.helmets.org/stats.htm

Yes it can.
Did you miss the rest of my joke where it's pretty obvious I was joking :downs:
Wow I feel all weird coming from the UK where it's the accepted norm to not wear a helmet. I accept it might save my life but while biking around the back streets of a city I feel it's not really necessary, seeing as traffic is often at a standstill anyway.
First, calm down. Seriously. Internet tough guy right here. Next, This isn't comparable to a seat belt. If you get in a head-on collision at 60 mp/h - a seat belt could save your life. A helmet, will not.
Yes it is, if you had a severe accident (in terms of biking, so falling off at a relatively high speed) it would more than likely save your life, in the same way a seatbelt would.
Thats retarded, it reminds how someone I know got a ticket for Biking past the speed limit.
Was it a specific speed limit for bikes or did they exceed the road speed limit? In the UK people can (in theory) be arrested for "cycling furiously" or something.
Wow I feel all weird coming from the UK where it's the accepted norm to not wear a helmet. You think these laws are absurd and pointless until you're in a situation where it would actually save your life. My dad wouldn't be alive right now if it wasn't for him wearing a helmet, and it wasn't because he was going high speeds or was hit by a car, just a dodgy bit of road and unlucky placement of a curb.
