• So apparently it's against the law not to wear a helmet while biking?

Everyone goes to school by bike in here in Holland ( We basically don't have buses, even in most rural areas ). Also most roads here have a seperated line for bicycles and pretty much everyone is required to take part in a ''bicycle test'' in primary school. Wearing a helmet here is not required , if you're a teenager and wear a helmet ( and you're not riding a sports bike ), you can seriously expect to get bullied here.
that was clearly a motor accident by looking at the helmet. not related to this thread.
yes it is.
Nothing is going to change, just wear a Helmet. But do it in style. [img_thumb]http://www.motorcycleinsurance.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/seven.jpg[/img_thumb]
thats not a bicycle or a moped helmet, if you wear that and are on either of the two you look like a retard
You are baddd. But really here almost nobody under the age of about 20 uses one, and i never ever see a cop giving one a ticket.
i always laugh at people who ride bicycles and wear motocross helmets, you are riding a peddle bicycle, not going 65 MPH on a 223cc motorcycle
What's to laugh at?
Why would you need to go to court for a minor offence like this? Waste of time imo
ive never worn a helmet in my entire life and I've never gotten shit about it from anyone but knowing facepunch im just as bad as a murderer and I deserve to be locked up for life because I am a BAD PERSON [editline]18th November 2010[/editline] hah no way they're making you go to court because of it? california sucks

Not wanting to wear a helmet just because other people will laugh at you is not a good reason not to. Helmets like these are actually pretty cool looking. Or if you're really THAT concerned with some imaginary reputation you have, then get a sports bike and pick up cycling. Then wear a helmet. Be the next Lance Armstrong. Minus the testicle problem.

From the few hours I have spent in the Netherlands I would say pedestrians are at more risk than cyclists.
Where I am, there's only bicycle lanes in rich neighborhoods. Everywhere else, bikes are on the street with the cars. Not exactly "safe", considering I've seen more people get hit by cars on bikes than I probably should have.
Because it's impossible to be killed or grievously injured in a bicycle crash. Right.
Not impossible but very unlikely, helmets for motorcycles can indeed save a lot of lives, but for a bicycle running around at impressive low-speeds ? it's just retarded bureaucracy. Saving 5 persons a year by enforcing the use of helmets on cyclists is really not worth the trouble.

Another thing, to all you people saying that the government has no right to force you to protect yourself: The fact is, it isn't just for you. If you get killed or sent to the hospital, it's taxpayer's dollars that are gonna be fixing you up, cleaning the blood off the street, or throwing you into the morgue. Not to mention the cost on your parents if they want a funeral service. So the government wants to keep you from killing yourself like an idiot so people like me don't have to waste money paying the person who scoops your dead ass from the street.
You deserved the ticket. TL;DR is a lie.
In Finland, it's against the law to bicycle without a helmet, while it also states in the law that it is not punishable. The fuck is the use of that? It's like the law that states that students are not allowed to have smokes in schools, but the teachers can't take them away from the students.

It's worth the £30 to minimise your chance of dying when the shit does hit the fan.
The cop was a prick. Question answered.
Sure everyone should use a helmet, I'm not disputing that but OP is right, it is a fucking stupid law which is coercive in nature. It's immoral to tell some one how to run their personal lives, for the better or worse. I don't give a fuck if its weed, a helmet, fatty foods or cigarettes, its fucking IMMORAL.
I never wear a helmet when I cycle, and I haven't ever fallen off my bike. Besides those helmets make you like :downs: And if I fall off my bike it's my fault anyways for being a shitty cycler.
and if you fall and sustain head truama you're an idiot to begin with.
Get hurt in an accident due to the lack of helmet Get in hospital => we, normal people paying our taxes to have those kind of idiots healed up. Well it's only true to countries with proper health care system such as France, but still.
and if you fall and sustain head trauma you're an idiot to begin with.
I figure you'd be more of an idiot after you received the head trauma.
A very laxly followed law, but it is against the law in America
So do people who smoke marijuana. Still, facepunch (and the general population) sympathizes with them. My point isn't that I didn't break the law, the point is that it's an absurd law. We don't need laws telling us what's safe for us.
Hope you're not serious. Those laws are there for people like you who think it's alright not to wear a helmet. Lets just say you and your friends were biking and the cop wasn't on patrol. You bike through an intersection and some idiot driver was going too fast and thought they were the king of the road and hit you. You would go flying through the air and seeing as you weren't wearing a helmet your head would've taken more damage and you could either possibly die or give severe brain injuries. Now that is why they have those safety laws. As well as the safetly laws for weapons and why you need to take a test before you get your drivers license and to wear your seatbelt etc. Here in New Zealand if you get caught without a helmet it's a $50 fine and if you're over the age of 15 and you're not wearing your seat belt it's $150 but if you're under the age of 15 then it's driver of the car who gets the fine because they're the ones to ensure that the child is wearing their safetly belt. So maybe you should rethink your little rant and actually wear your heltmet. It might save your life one day.
I see box forts all over the thread
Wow, I never knew that was illegal. I mean, I've ridden a bike almost everyday for about 5 years without a helmet and never has a policeman ever had to stop me. I love living in Riyadh.
