Because the Minecraft aesthetic is dirt-cheap to produce.
All the modelling and texturing is easily a one-man job.
Then they put all of their budget on the voice-actors.
A TellTale-Game based on Half-Life 2, drama among City 17 (or some other city's) rebels. That would be AMAZING!
Or something based on Metro. ;____;
I think Minecraft had a pretty interesting exiting story already albeit the lack of information on it. They could've used the opportunity to expand upon it.
I want to see the sales on this game before I decide whether it was a waste or not.

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say it'll be either be Critically low/below average-Average at beast, Money wise, it'll probably need it's own Fort Knox times 10 to store all the money this game will earn.
I'm sorry I just can personally not see this game in any good light, it's Telltale's Minecraft: Story Mode.
Through the whole video the scenes they made didn't even look dramatic or anything to me because if that happened in Minecraft then there would be loads of ways you could get out of the situation(e.g. creepers on bridge surrounding you) so there is no appeal to me for this, but I can see how this will sell well because it's aimed at kids if anything.
The problem this is Telltale making this. These are guys who at their best can tell really awesome and engaging stories, for them to waste their talent on this is insulting.
Insulting? To whom?
You said it yourself, they make awesome and engaging stories. So quit whining and give them a chance to actually tell an awesome and engaging story the way they want to do it.
Fuck Minecraft
Go make a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Adventure game. Just the idea of it is more exciting that whatever this game turns out to be.

But Minefuckingcraft of all things?
Metro? Sam and Max season, Stalker, Fallout? Anything that could produce really really good stories or continuations of great stories, and they're wasting time, money, and talent on this.
It's insulting to some of us that would prefer Telltale using their high praise and talent on stuff worth that talent and money.

TWD was amazing. TWAU was also. Their GoT and TFTB aren't bad either. But I feel like they've become a prostitute now, they must make an adventure game out of everything. And goddamn Minecraft too
Genuinly interested in an actual storyline to Minecraft other than get tough, defeat final boss, poem.
However, does it REALLY have to be Minecraft? There are countless other games series with far more interesting backstories for Telltale to use instead (Half-Life, Warframe, Metro, Fallout.ect).
I'd kill for a Warframe Telltale.

It's insulting to you that Telltale would use their good reputation and talent on something that you don't like or don't deem worthy of them?
Minecraft doesn't have a story, plain and simple. It has elements that can be used to make a story (most of which seem to be ignored so far), and it can be used to make a story that's completely oblivious to the giant dragon in another realm. I agree with you - making a story from Metro or Fallout would be a lot better than this. But unlike Metro or Fallout which both have preconfined story elements Telltale is free to go completely wild on this one because there is no, and will be no, established canon to what Story Mode is based on.
I understand you don't like Minecraft very much, but give Telltale a bit of leeway on this one. The trailer is awful, yes, but I think it would be better to judge their efforts on this after release, not before.

they've always done this though, making games out of random existing franchises.
TWD S1>TWAU=TFTB>GoT>TWD S2 IMO
Also isn't their next project after the Michonne miniseries and this confirmed to be a Marvel IP?

The entitlement is reaching critical mass
i cant see why people cant just sit the fuck down over this kind of thing, the telltale crew is doing this because they want to. Mojang didn't force them to work on it. Telltale didn't force the talent to work on the game either. They all got offers/applied for the roles. It's not wasted talent and money, they're doing it because they wanna do it.
they dont owe you shit buddy, and you can bitch and moan about how 'insulting' it is to you that a developer said 'hey this'd be a fun project, lets give a sandbox game an episodic story!' just because you don't particularly like the IP, but at the end of the day that's all you're doing, bitching and moaning about it.

holy shit a telltale game in the metro universe would actually be rad as hell
Am I the only one who wants a new Monkey Island game?
Am I the only one who wants a new Monkey Island game?
Man, Tales of Monkey Island was so good. Hard to believe that was six years ago.
Another 'season' would be lovely, now Telltale has upped their game a bit.
Honestly just that or another season of S&M (even though the ending(s) to S3 makes it look to be the finale of the series) would be neat. As much as I love the serious titles Telltale are producing, I like Tales from the Borderlands being TT going a bit back towards their comedic roots.
Maybe that's just me though.
Maybe they're making a Minecraft game so they use the ton of money that they're going to make to fund other games.
Maybe.
