You are just like my uncle, he is a vegetarian but yet he still cooks meat whenever we go to his house, he still does not tell us why he never eats meat.
but those shove pictures of battery hens in your face every 5 second types who bitch and whine about how eating meat is evil have a special place in the underworld waiting for them.
Maybe he just hasn't found any meat that he likes the taste of? That's a perfectly understandable reason for being vegetarian. I'd consider it better then trying to come up with some dumb excuse, too many people seem to think they need a very good reason for why they don't eat something, and IMO "I don't like how it tastes" is fine as long as you don't need it to survive.

Why is it stupid to not eat meat because it's unsustainable and causes avoidable suffering?
I don't mind vegetarians as long as they respect the fact that I love the shit out of meat. It's a lifestyle choice, and if that's how you want to subsist then that's up to you. I'm in no position to argue.
I have no problems with veggies. More meat for me!
I'm a vegetarian, I have no problem with people eating or enjoying meat. But I flip my shit when somebody claims to be a vegetarian yet he/she eats fish and/or chicken.
This. *shakefist*. I wouldn't mind if they'd just not eat meat but do eat chicken and/or fish. But munching chicken and/or fish after an entire "meat is murder" and "those poor animals" charade makes me grind my teeth.
Although we certainly eat way too much meat, eating none at all is just as stupid. It's okay for a (full grown) adult to go with a diet that excludes meat. But if they force it on to their (growing) children, who need meat as a part of their diet, they deserve a firm smack in the face.
Please don't smack my parents in the face. I'm a perfectly healthy human being who has never consumed any meat. Since moving out I've met 4 others like me. Along with the fact that there aren't any health warnings associated with it it's pretty obvious that a Vegetarian diet has no deficiencies for children.
I'm vegetarian, my parents raised me as one, and I agree with the, "beliefs," or however you want to put it.
My friends piss-take with me about it, and I piss-take with them as well, I don't mind what their opinions are on it.
I don't mind vegetarians, in fact one of my households (parents are divorced) is fully vegetarian. I won't eat meat at that household because I respect their beliefs. They do respect my right to eat meat though, so I'm glad for that when we go out for dinner somewhere.
It's sustainable, if it wasn't our ancient ancestors wouldn't have kept cattle and other animals.
Back then there wasn't 6 billion of us. The fact of the matter is, meat is a terrible use of resources. It uses more land, energy and water, and the western diet - notably in america - is literally unsustainable.
http://www.ajcn.org/content/78/3/660S.long
The energy return of meat compared to plants is tiny. I think the statistic is that it takes around 20x more land to make up the required daily calorific content for meat than rice. As for dietary requirements, it's absolute bullshit to suggest you can't be have a healthy, sustainable diet on plants alone. Absolute pure denial.
i don't eat meat because of health issues.
for my perspective it's annoying because there are these self-righteous types who think that because you don't eat meat it means that you act a certain way and therefor must be stopped in the name of good or something.
i usually just keep eating my celery.
I've never met any vegetarians who hate meat-eaters, but I imagine they'd be about as annoying and objectionable as meat-eaters who hate vegetarians (http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1161908 for some examples)
Why is it stupid to not eat meat because it's unsustainable and causes avoidable suffering?
Because frankly, we don't give a damn. It's tasty, and you're never going to convince enough people to stop eating meat that you'll even have a marginal effect on the amount of animals being slaughtered for food. So enjoy it, lest their deaths be in vain.
Yeah I know a great deal of vegetarians - easily a dozen who I meet on a regular basis - and I can't think of a single example where they've brought up vegetarianism in order to stir a debate or chastise people for eating meat. I don't think it's fair to slate people for arguing strongly for vegetarianism in a thread debating vegetarianism, though.

I don't care if rape is immoral, it feels good and it won't stop me from doing it, so enjoy rape or it will be in vain.

Stop making that comparison to rape, it's fucking hilarious.

Rape=/=Eating meat.
Stop making that comparison to rape, it's fucking hilarious.
I'm illustrating that your argument form leads to absurd conclusions.
Rape=/=Eating meat.
So? It was my aim to invalidate his argument and nothing else.
sometimes this community stuns me with its inability to argue philosophically
Comparing eating meat to rape is as absurd as you can get.
wow. just wow.
[editline]7th February 2012[/editline]
the sheer inability to argue logically demonstrates how untenable a position you are holding.
sometimes this community stuns me with its inability to argue philosophically

You fail to point out in what way. Until then, keep your smart ass remarks to yourself.
More meat for me.
You fail to point out in what way. Until then, keep your smart ass remarks to yourself.
My totally legitimate remarks? My analogy was valid because it used basically exactly the same argument form as his. I sought to show that not being able to change people's minds or people doing X anyway is not grounds for making something morally permissible. I did this through counter example; rape. Hence his argument was insufficient in supporting his claim.
Their inability to recognise a pretty simple counterexample - and refusal to reject or refute it, shows me they're shit at arguing because they until they can reject my counter example, they have inconsistent beliefs (and it's impossible to have true, inconsistent beliefs).
Your rape strawman is not very convincing, it's just absurd and funny.
Your rape strawman is not very convincing, it's just absurd and funny.
it's not a strawman
it's a counterargument
you need to provide a new argument because I showed that it leads to contradictions
I'm not saying eating meat is wrong because it's like rape
I'm saying your argument is shit because it legitimises rape
which is wrong
please understand
he's not comparing eating meat to rape.
he's saying that using that same logic you could dismiss rape as okay.
In a lecture today we used the analogy of hardware/software to explain supervenience in mental phenomena. HOW ABSURD! MENTAL ACTIVITY IS NOT THE SAME THING AS SOFTWARE!! STRAWMAN!! STRAWMAN!! YOU'RE WRONG!!
I'm saying that's retarded, because rape is nothing like killing an animal for food
but he's not comparing killing an animal for food to rape
More meat for me.
I love meat, and if someone doesn't want to, fine by me.
We have been eating it since we existed, it tastes good, and while disavowing meat in your diet shows you may care about your health more than an average person, being able to eat meat makes it easier to get a balanced meal. Did I also say it tastes delicious?
It's going to cause pain, it always causes pain, but yknow what, that's how it has always been.
I'm saying that's retarded, because rape is nothing like killing an animal for food
oh god
that's the whole fucking point of my fucking counterexample what the fuck is wrong with you how are you this fucking bad at philosophy
fuck
oh god

The fuck do you keep talking about rape then?
It's silly, and obviously not a very good way of getting your point across
