haha get out of here.
who are you and why should I care
you want a "dumb gorefest movie" watch saw
I'll watch SAW if I want an interesting violent thriller film
I'll watch SAW 2/3/4/5/Hostel if I want a dumb gorefest film
this movie actually has merits as a piece of art
yeah yeah symbolic artistic etc. etc. whatever, like I said I don't care about that shit because the way it's presented is stale and boring
also just to satisfy my curiosity as to whether you actually understand the artistic merits you tout the movie as having would you mind exploring said artistry in a bit of depth
if you're going to say "no watch it yourself" then don't bother replying
im talking about artistic merits as in like...good shots and stuff like that.
oh okay
[editline]22nd October 2010[/editline]
"and stuff like that"
[editline]22nd October 2010[/editline]
you don't understand the movie at all do you
oh okay

I don't think you understood it to be honest. Look at what it means.

i thought you didnt care about the meaning of it?
i thought you didnt care about the meaning of it?
I don't nor have I implied I do
in fact I feel I've been quite clear that I don't care about the artsy aspects because the manner in which it's portrayed is boring as shit to me personally
I don't think you understood it to be honest. Look at what it means.
I haven't watched it nor do I intend to for previously established reasons. if it makes you feel better I read into it a bit and watched a few reviews
but you guys claim that it's artistically & symbolically significant and there's a lot to "get" so I'm just trying to see if you guys have anything substantive to support that or if you're simply saying "it is"
it's up to you guys, you don't have to if you don't want to, but it would give you some credibility here because I'm not the one that was even being provocative about this matter in the first place
its one of the 1001 movies to see before you die!!!
Sorry OP but you're a pussy.
Sorry OP but you're a pussy.
What did I do? :gonk:
I find it amusing how when a movie is deemed 'symbolic,' suddenly it becomes some piece of profound art.
I'll make a film of a three-legged dog humping a tortoise on top of a pile of raw cow brains & claim it's a metaphor for abortion. It'll become a cult classic.
what.?
just finished watching.
not impressed.
not that much gore, just made you feel a tad sick, but nothing like Hostel.
also VERY boring.
uncultured swine itt

Its not a gore movie at all. Its just fucked up.
Why did you think it was a gore movie?
i dont REALLY.
it was boring though, and even hostel is more "fucked up".
theres more too fucked up than "look at all this blood and dismemberment", dude.
theres more too fucked up than "eat this poop", dude
i dont REALLY.

In those terms, I would say Texas Chainsaw Massacre is more fucked up than that.
But we're not talking about those terms.
fine whatever.
it was boring but,
i feel reborn after watching this movie.
thank you, facepunch.
also
"this movie was not that broooootal"-sister
okay see again professor, you say it's deep and artsy but you don't elaborate you just say "oh this movie is deep and if you don't get it you're an uncultured swine"
the one time you DID try to elaborate all you could come up with was "im talking about artistic merits as in like...good shots and stuff like that."
"good shots and stuff like that." boy that really proves that you know your shit
either prove you're quite in tune with what you're blathering about or stop being a pretentious douche

wish i could agree more than once
You could believe how sadistic the masters were, the laughing at the end, watching the cruelty.. You think its all a joke, but I was genuinely freaked by their performances.
Not being English, I'm surprised they managed this.
I don't think I'd watch it again, ever. As I feel now that this type of culture has occurred in real life.

im gonna turn this one over to the pros, then! edward bushcombe, former head of publishing at the british film institute, says...
"Pasolini's intent was to use the unbridled use of power, taken to the ultimate of sexual degradation, as a metaphor for fascism itself...but there are other messages. [blah blah blah eating shit = capitalism] Perhaps what is ultimately most disturbing is the sense that by this point in his career Pasolini had at best an ambiguous attitude toward the body and sexuality."
hmm. that doesnt really add much to the argument but he sorta says imagine first and foremost that its meant as pornography, and then when you realize how horrible it is, its even worse.
you haven't
said
anything
have you seen this movie?
well i havent either so why are we even arguing about it?
[editline]23rd October 2010[/editline]
secondly, chill out, its a forums.
[editline]23rd October 2010[/editline]
so okay. im not gonna convince you to watch this or not watch it, yknow, whatever! but i am gonna say this: whats the matter, too deep for you?
no. im not gonna say that. its a pretty simple metaphor, but its a metaphor nonetheless. that gives it merits above your usual movie of this ilk. whats the thematic arc in hostel? oh, there isnt one? okay.
and THAT, my friend, has made all the difference.
no I made it clear on the first page that I haven't seen it nor do I intend to
and I was really under the impression that you had seen it since you're adamant about its artistic and symbolic depth... so basically you're arguing for something you know nothing about. you don't even have a frame of reference in which to argue
also I'm perfectly calm, dude

I never got 'round to watching it, but I've heard the book is 10 times more disgusting... with that in mind, I'll probably first read the book and then watch the movie

this is probably a good idea, IF I do ever watch the movie I'll be sure to read the book beforehand
