Can't draw an audience that cares then it's all worthless. Get another job that can support you.
An audience can take years to build. Not everyone goes viral when they want and instant-followers-just-add-water. And many of the most popular channels started out in college when they were riding their scholarships in their freetime. After that many did have jobs. And believe it or not, many people don't realize half the income from ads goes to the video owner, they just think it's YT being assholes for no reason or something.
For fuck sake, sites need to stop using shitty fucking ads that block a button. Wikia has this retarded fucking system where it puts ads on the side of the page meaning that if you want to scroll down (Atleast on a MacBook) you have to use your arrows, otherwise when you try to click the thing to scroll, you'll click the fucking ad.
an audience that cares can still use adblock also; who the fuck are you to say that someone who wants to make it their dream to get paid to do what they love, to fuck off because "omg 30 second ad"
Who the fuck am I? I'm the fucker using adblock as a judging system to pick who I deem worth to receive profit.
There's a setting in Adblock Plus that allows non-intrusive (so text and some non-obnoxious graphical) ads. I have that feature turned on, because I like content and I want content generators to have money. However, I'm sick of having my browser assaulted by annoying, intrusive, misdirecting and sometimes outright malicious ads.
Who the fuck am I? I'm the fucker using adblock as a judging system to pick who I deem worth to receive profit.
Don't know about the others, but my points weren't directly aimed to you, but towards the vanilla user in general. If you don't like someones content, then feel free to keep adblock on for that channel. You're effectively voting with a time wallet. In the case of this campaign, many people think ads are purely YT's business and it doesn't touch the author. And they don't know enough about this stuff to realize that this isn't just getting rid of annoying stuff, but perhaps removing a small brick of their income without entirely being aware of it.
ok, and from what i'm getting, you're using it on all of youtube without caring about how the creators get money theres nothing wrong with using adblock right now, but at some point, if it gets big enough, it will be a problem, this video isn't a dude ebegging that he cant earn 1 million dollars by releasing 2 frames of animation a year, its just an advisory video to how things could get in the future if people keep abusing an extension that is supposed to protect you from harmful ads, not completely delegitimize the advertising business also; i use adblock too! but theres this crazy feature for it that allows me to surf the web safely, conveniently, and considerately!
What makes you think I'm blocking all youtubers?
Have I become in in some inverse corporatist dimension? It's not the consumers responsibility to ensure that an enterprise, service or product is profitable and sustainable And the only thing we are sustaining is the rigged bastard greed of google adsense
Yeah, I'm not turning Adblock off. Not even for those shitty websites that tell you to turn it off to complete their "Which Twilight Character Would Eat at Burger King?" surveys.
This is also a really good article to read about the situation from a writer at Penny-Arcade: http://www.penny-arcade.com/report/article/ad-blocker-the-games-press-and-why-cosplay-galleries-lead-to-better-reporti I should also mention that the ideas put forth in the article kind of resonate with me. If I were a bigger channel I might ask for some donations to help subsidize some of the stuff on the stuff I make, and that's how many REALLY GOOD channels work, especially through the new subbable.com site that launched. The vlog brothers who also started the crash course channel, launched subbable.com which is a subscription supported system which basically lets people directly support the people that make the content they want. They use YT as the streaming service since it's already free, but for certain levels of support, they remove certain levels of advertisement. Crash Course and CGPGrey on are on there, and I think both have reached their monthly goals. In the case of crash course, they got a big grant from google in their attempt to have more channels develop more TV ish content which can increase quality and variety on more marketable content, their channel covers biology, history, chemisty and physics and more. And they launched this site since the grant is fading out. So we may see more channels move to this kind of model. The IMPORTANT thing about this is that it's a hybrid system. People can choose to donate and support the people involved or not, and the normal user is unaware of that fact and it helps remove ads for everyone. It's a really neat idea.
regardless of content creators 'deserving' revenue for their content, before it became the in-thing to run ads on your youtube channel we saw a lot less rehashing and 'shovelware' content occuring on youtube. ever since money became a factor, all originality seems to have gone out the window in favor of trying to get as many views as possible. i'm simply not supporting anyone who tries to profit from a youtube video, and if they are going to bitch about the lack of money they make from it then it likely means their content wasn't worth watching in the first place.
youtube will eventually use hulu or blip's way of making it tough for adblock users or circumventing adblock completely because adblock will become so popular and actually become a problem because a lot of people dont actually turn off adblock INDIVIDUALLY for sites they want to support. pay attention.
Content creators are already bypassing ad-block by gaining sponsors and doing advertisements directly in their videos, and I'm completely fine with it since it's usually just like a free month of netflix for example, Devin Graham got ford to sponsor his roadtrips and it hasn't changed his videos at all I don't see a single shot focusing on the Ford logo.
But it is. Running a youtube channel requires effort and something called time. Time it not limitless and 24 hours is not very much. It's easy to get stressed considering, creating content, editing, rendering, uploakuding takes time.
They started off for free, I really don't see the entitlement here when thousands of others are ready to give me equal content just for the sake, for the knowledge of my appreciation and for free.
Interestingly enough adblock+ has come out with a feature which whitelists ads deemed "Acceptable". There's a set of criteria which includes not obscuring page content, not being animated, not making noise, etc. I've decided to activate this feature (well, leave it activated, it's on by default) because I do think that ads are one of the reasons that so much of the content on the internet is free and wish to further supports the creation of new content. So long as I can avoid the ads that are literally a risk to my computer I don't mind seeing a few static image links in the page margins advertising things.
It's known that Abp gets paid for letting certain adds through, use Ad block, not Abp.
I use Adblock and I'm glad I deny money to idiots who sit on their asses and play video games to make a living. Go get a real job, lazy dumbfucks.
I use Adblock and I'm glad I deny money to idiots who sit on their asses and play video games to make a living. Go get a real job, lazy dumbfucks.
But you still watch them?
if only someone were to create some sort of adblock that blocks video ads and nothing else [editline]29th August 2013[/editline]
Yeah, they're probably actively working to circumvent adblock. I use ABP and Youtube ads get through, haven't tried Adblock but if the same shit happens then damn. Blip also does that stupid 90 second wait, sometimes ABP blocks it again but then blip just updates and gets around it.
adblock already bypasses the blip 90 second timer thing. the trick is that adblock lets blip play 0.000001 seconds of the ad video then it makes it go away
But you still watch them?
Nah
Disable adblock so that they can make more money. Yeah sure ok. How about you adapt to a changing environment instead of making propaganda on how terrible it is, im so terribly sorry the heavy handed internet control laws didn't pass, but maybe you should take that as a sign that you can't exactly control how customers consume content on the internet. So change... or die, thats capitalism after all isn't it?
I mean honestly, are the Ads really THAT intrusive?
Yes. Very, very yes. Google and Facebook are two companies where their entire business is literally collecting consumer data for marketing purposes. Not sure if you've seen Facebook's targeted-ad categories, but some of them (namely the categories to do with sexuality) are fucking disgusting.
I didn't even know youtube had ads until someone told me a few years ago.
My question is, do they get money from ads people see, but not click? If I turn off adblock and never click an ad, do they get anything from it?
to be fair its only 30 seconds but I'll only wait if its a good and long video not every god damn music video from VIVO.
30 second ads on 15 second videos can fuck right off.
I mean honestly, are the Ads really THAT intrusive?
Yes. They double page load times for me, they're a great way for malware to end up on legit sites, they're obnoxious, they're visually loud, sometimes they're even literally loud, they can crash plugins from time to time...yes, yes they bloody well are THAT intrusive. I would also extend that to ads in pretty much everything. I don't buy magazines anymore. Why bother? Half the fucking mag is nothing but advertisements. I don't watch TV live anymore, I TIVO everything. Why? 5 minutes of show to 5 minutes of commercial. Spike can suck my TIVO's shiny metal cock. I'll be damned if I watch one second of their programming live.
To all the people that bring up Youtube for adblock; is it just me, or are all those goddamn ads getting through anyway? Adblock and Adblock Plus aren't doing jackshit to stop Youtube's constant fog of advertisements now..

Yeah, they're probably actively working to circumvent adblock. I use ABP and Youtube ads get through, haven't tried Adblock but if the same shit happens then damn. Blip also does that stupid 90 second wait, sometimes ABP blocks it again but then blip just updates and gets around it.

Yeah I've only seen google ads... which is bullshit. I see nothing on youtube though. I even adblocked the stupid "USE YOUR REAL NAME! NO? DON'T WANT TO? WE'LL ASK YOU AGAIN IN 2 DAYS KTHX" prompt I prefer things like in Rev3 videos where they mention a sponsor rather than have unskippable adverts in the intro
There's a setting in ABP that lets 'non-obtrusive' ads...AKA ads served by whoever paid us last week...through. Turn that off and Youtube is useable again.
I wouldn't use adblock on Blip if they didn't let people put more ads in than fucking television shows. Unskippable one at the beginning, one unskippable commercial break in the middle of a 15 minute video? What the hell? That's too much. I'm not even including the sometimes random ones at the bottom.
i whitelist youtube channels that i like (linustechtips for example) other than that i only disable it for those with the little messages asking nicely :)
I started using ad block right after they started sticking ad's in youtube videos. If you want ad revenue, don't interrupt me watching a video. Stick your ads on the side or bottom of the screen.
I'm never going to disable adblock, no matter if the ads are unobtrusive or whatever. It's just annoying and wasting screen space However, I'd gladly donate to whoever I screw out of 5¢ if I like their shit
I will never stop using Adblock because I don't like looking at things I don't want to look at. Life is harder with things being forced into you.
Nah
but blocking ads will only affect the people whose videos you watch either you watch "idiots who sit on their asses and play video games" or you're hurting the content creators you actually like
