Actually, sentient life is probably not the only group of lifeforms that has a soul/spirit. Anything with an electrical network, mammals, birds, insects, fish, even machines collect background energy during it's existence. During that stage, it eventually comes to carry the consciousness after a short period of time, which becomes merged with the nervous systems, or in some cases, the hard drives and processing units, of the subject. Upon death, the electrical charge dissipates, but the consciousness remains, sustained solely by the background radiation of the universe from which it grew around an electrical network, like coral growing around a freshly-sunken ship. As I said, this applies to anything with an electrical network, which includes electronic devices. So theoretically, if an artificial intelligence is permanently shut down, it would continue on as a ghost. The same would apply for a Terminator, or any other kind of intelligent mechanoid. And that's a weird & possibly heartwarming thought: robots have souls. Maybe GlaDOS wasn't joking about Android Hell, after all... So to sum up, animals and electronic devices have souls. This also includes any kind of plant with a rudimentry nervous system, like a Venus fly trap or whatnot.
Sorry, pal. But BricknHead says that you're famed for crap ideas... I totally agree. When you died it would just be like you were sleeping forever.
Death is like the time before you were born.
I think you missed my point. I mean I'm not an expert, however I believe myself to be highly educated on the issue. My point it that it doesn't take an expert to know the obvious. All physics have laws, therefore for something to have come into existence, something would have broken the laws.
Then being highly educated, I'm sure you could understand how, although matter (if considered protons and neutrons) cannot be created out of thin air, electrons and photons (carriers of energy) have demonstrated behavior in certain scenarios that they can seemingly defy physics by being in multiple areas at once? My point being a divine consciousness like God, supposing he exists, is not composed of physical matter but of energy
It makes no sense when you die everything just ends. and your in darkness. Forever. Something Must happen when you die. Like Heaven, Purgatory, hell, even recarnation.
My theory is that since scientist have their limits on what they can figure out (At least for now) that noone really can know. We can all have our belief but you really don't know till it happens. BUT I hope I turn into a ghost so I can scare people. =]
I could drift through space forever, with no mass. Not a ghost, not even a presence. I would be nothing. Just a set of non-existant "eyes" that I could see galaxies as a whole through, or observe how atoms are linked through. I would float about forever in the universe, discovering the unending bank of secrets of it, figuring out how it works. I could go into the cores of suns, fly into black holes, drift over distant moon's canyons. Observe extra-terrestrial life, fly between atoms and suns. Oh, what I would give to be able to do that. But who knows, you might just end up in a long line before the pearly gates with a bunch of other smelly souls. God is up there looking like an uber'd TF2 heavy with a big ol' banhammer. If you sucked at life, you get B& to hell forever, chained to a red-hot rock, whipped by white-hot chains, and branded with satanic ensignias. If you didn't suck, you get to go into heaven and sing and float around the streets of a big golden utopia lazily forever. I hope that the first one will come true for me.
What I do believe: The end of conscious and biological life, body rots, nothingness, etc. Fun idea: We are reincarnated as somebody else through an endless cycle, but we get to live as everybody ever and deja vu means you've been reincarnated as that person before.
Do you guys remember before you were born? That's exactly how death feels.
Exactly, hit it right on the spot. To those who think it doesn't make sense that you will be nothing after death, I'm sorry that your mind was manipulated into such a way you could not think otherwise. I think dieing and ceasing to exist is one ideal and realistic way. The other Santana brought was also interesting, I would love to be able to just explore the entire universe and figure out everything I couldn't, watch people go along with their lives, or even different intelligent life go on with their lives. But after all that, after I discovered everything I possibly wanted and became bored, I would like to cease exist. But let me tell you, Heaven is not a perfect place, it is very far off from being a good place, it is good by the average man who lacks to challenge the unknown with questions.
Exactly, hit it right on the spot.
Except I don't. Describe.
Maybe..we return as someone else..but with no memory of our past lives. Again, And Again. IDK..Im Catholic..Heaven would be great..But, i mean.. im not hard headed.
I just don't think death is the end. I think we may have some higher purpose. Whether it's living with the kings of old or just being free of the burden of a physical body and we exist as energy, I don't know. I just feel that there is something else. [editline]03:30AM[/editline]
Realism Theory: Nothing but pure darkness. An infinite vortex of pure nothingness. No thoughts or anything. Idealistic Theory: The well-known, sought after, legendary place called Heaven. Nothing but pure joy. A place that doesn't compare to Earth one bit. It's so great in Heaven, it's just surreal.
Oh, I get it... You're rational. Teehee.

Can we grasp what death is when we don't even fully understand what life is?
There's a bright light, and then an overwhelming feeling of peace.
Or just think of it in a simple way. You ever sleep one night and you don't have any dreams what so ever? That's what it could be like, just sleeping without dreams....OR we could be stuck in a dream world within our minds and when our brain dies the electricity shoots off and we are stuck in that dream world which might seem real to us and thus live there for all of time. But then again time is just a persistint illiusion so what do i know.
sex 24/7 and when you weren't having sex it's playing saxophone for clad women in New Orleans
Deadly.
I think the only rational answer is that no one knows. I cannot simply assume that nothing happens for the same reason that I cannot assume we go to heaven or hell. There is no proof or disproof for any of those outcomes. We will simply see when the day comes. Edit: -snip- I just kind of ended up falling victim to the spaghetti monster thing. I need to rethink what I was trying to say, better.
Exactly [editline]08:42AM[/editline] Yeah, we are brainwashed, and your belief is totally new and original and you newer heard it before.
Uh, what? I know it's insulting to say that to people, but the only thing due here to religious poeple is outright mockery for them being so naive. Please don't get the feeling that I think I'm high on some pedestal for doing it either, I am no more or no less of you. The bible and the Qua ran are a complete human fabrication to keep others on a moral leash. It had nothing to do with the power of the Holy Spirit. It's been edited, misinterpreted, and perverted to such extremes is hardly reliable, yet people follow that filth is because they either want heaven or they don't want eternal hellfire, or both. Tyrannical priests have edited that book over 14800 times through several translations, they used the bible to solidify their powerful status. Why is this bad? It causes trouble, sure it doesn't cause many Holy Wars anymore, but it affects people around the world in much more subtle ways. It breaks apart societies, races, and friendships. The worst thing about it? Try telling a 20 year old born and raised Christian that god doesn't exist, you can give him evidence, you can give everything he needs to know, and he will refuse to believe it, Why? Because his parents filled his mind with nothing but this starch, depriving him of his own free will to think for himself. The bible tells him what is wrong and what is right and there is no questioning it and if you go ahead anyways, you're going to hell to burn and suffer forever just because he was indulging in his own human instincts. Does that not fishy to you? If it doesn't, holy freaking shit. Now that's just weak philosophy I'm getting across here. So take out the bible and what do you have? All you really have is God. Something similar to a Greek god. And why don't you believe in Poseidon? Because we know now that water in the ocean is moved by the moon. So why do we believe in god? Because we don't know how the universe was made, or if it was even "made" at all. It's always fear of the unknown, and someone clever enough has taken advantage of that and turned it into a world wide cult. You can believe in God, I don't give two shits if you do, you have every right to. Hell you can believe when you die you get to be with Megan Fox for the rest of you spiritual life. Belief in God is not a religion itself, and it doesn't hurt another man out there. It is everything people have made it makes it a religion, a religion that causes trouble. It's the rituals, the rights and wrongs, the traditions, and brainwashing that make it horrible.
I think the only rational answer is that no one knows. So why could God exist, most people would answer that it makes sense. But if you do enough research and think deeply enough through all it's holes, you realize that it's not too much of a realistic thing either. It's been taught that it makes sense.
Eternal life is an impossible concept. Even in paradise you'd run out of things to do if you were there for eternity. Eventually you would have done it all a million times over. Then it would be hell, wouldn't it?

Not only is heaven all about pure bliss, but it's also about forever worshiping God. "Thanks for letting me live for 80 years, I'm gonna worship you forever!" That sounds like a load of SUPER FUN.

Imagine you were watching a movie and the power went out.
Sleep requires an active brain. Everything we think of, requires the use of our brain. Why do so many people think that after death, there is an exception to this? You being aware of yourself is due to your brain, and the processes going on inside your brain, nothing else. So how is it possible to be aware of oneself, to have a functioning mind, after the very thing that makes it possible, the brain, has rotted away?
I don't believe it is our actual brain that does the thinking. It is simply a link between our physical being and our soul. Logically, matter cannot think, and our brain is simply matter, (or protons and neutrons charged or whatever object you wish to call it). Therefore our brain cannot think without the assistance of a soul.
Do you guys remember before you were born? That's exactly how death feels.
congrats you made me have a panic attack :derp:
I don't believe it is our actual brain that does the thinking. It is simply a link between our physical being and our soul. Logically, matter cannot think, and our brain is simply matter, (or protons and neutrons charged or whatever object you wish to call it). Therefore our brain cannot think without the assistance of a soul.
The soul is a non-existent entity that people come up with to explain a yet completely known subject in life. Neuron's are the first part in how humans think, Neurons are capable of sending signals through our nervous system, which can control movement, digestion, blinking, heart beat, etc. Charged Neurons do create though and are used as inputs and are sent to your sensory organs. In this case they are sent to different places based on how you are thinking, if you think with imagery, the neurons electrical charges are sent to the occipital lobe of the brain. There is different types of matter. A rock cannot think, but a human can because he/she is made of biological matter that has energy to sustain it's activities. Ask yourself how bits and pieces of silicon and metal are put together so I can play Crysis, hard isn't it? Matter by itself is not much good when it comes to creating thought, but it is backed by kinetic energy to fuel it. Humans are stuck in the habit of forming a conclusion about the unknown. I think we need to realize that we don't know everything. The rational thing to do would be to stay in the dark and keep searching for an answer rather than make up an answer for everything. If we didn't challenge ourselves we would be nowhere.
I know for certain what I have as I am now, that I don't want to forfeit, but one day it will be time and I'll pass on. I can only imagine what awaits on the other side of death. [editline]01:18PM[/editline]
Eternal life is an impossible concept. Even in paradise you'd run out of things to do if you were there for eternity. Death truly is the curse of man, you can't escape it, and you do not know what comes after, nobody ever does, and nobody ever will. Maybe it's like Beetleguiece? I also have faith in God, so bash me for that, but it's at least something to look forward to and just as valid a theory as anything else. [editline]01:21PM[/editline] "Live life or die trying" is pretty much where I'm gonna end my part. [editline]01:26PM[/editline]
There's a bright light, and then an overwhelming feeling of peace.
Sounds like birth.
