Hahahahahahahahahaha. Hahahahaha. Haha. No, he wasn't.
He's an admitted Democratic Socialist, yeah.
Also, it pays to know why Asimov said the venomous words he did to 1984. Asimov, and his family, were refugees from Russia, and as such he was brought up with an intense hatred for Communism.
The ending was actually one of the best I read in years. [sp]"He gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark moustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother."[/sp]
The ending was so amazing. There was so much emotion in those last few lines that I felt the effect so profoundly that I was nearly in tears. Orwell is a FANTASTIC writer. Also, note the index after you've read the book. [sp]It's all in modern English, and spoken in past tense, suggesting that Big Brother was overthrown.[/sp]
I've always been curious to see what all the talk is about. I'll be looking into this after I'm through with my current pile. Had to reread a few old favorites.
I just got done reading Animal Farm, and loved it. I'm sure Orwell did an even better job on 1984, being his most popular book and all.

Winston was a panzy...
Winston was a panzy...
He was (In his opinion) one man suffering a severe bout of thoughtcrime in a thoroughly indoctrinated nation. He was already dead, in his opinion, and the advent of Julia didn't help all that much. In that situation, I doubt you'd be any less of a "pansy". Probably be a helluva lot more of one.
oh look someone just read 1984 for the first time and thinks that suddenly makes him an intellectual nothing to see, move along folks
oh look someone just read 1984 for the first time and thinks that suddenly makes him an intellectual nothing to see, move along folks
Eh, what? I've read it over 20+ times, especially in my senior year at school - I did a project for English which was a literary analysis on it. It doesn't make me an intellectual, but I'm allowed to have an opinion on the novel, and in my opinion, calling Winston a pansy is plain ignorant.

That's a thought... ...I suppose the fact that Julia had more balls than him throughout the entire novel doesn't prove my point.

Julia just wants to enjoy herself whilst she can, Winston wants to see the Party overthrown, but can see no real way to do it, and he is burdened by the fear that they will be caught - entirely justified as it turns out.
Congratulations on entering highschool and reading the curriculum. Remember, it's fiction!
Actually Trogdon, it isn't part of Scottish Secondary School curriculum, I chose to read it of my own accord ^^ And, obviously it's fiction - well done on that.
Actually Trogdon, it isn't part of Scottish Secondary School curriculum, I chose to read it of my own accord ^^ And, obviously it's fiction - well done on that.
Well here in America I'm tired of everyone reading this book and thinking they suddenly have a revelation and know that the government is turning evil and say everything they do is coming true from this book. It's fiction, and needs to be evaluated as that. I've seen it quoted in arguments countless times and it's not a reliable source. Don't be a stupid American kid. Please.
It rocks because : In every news threads you can post "oh it's 1984" .
oh look someone just read 1984 for the first time and thinks that suddenly makes him an intellectual nothing to see, move along folks
I read it when I was in tenth grade... I'm graduating next week. It's more than "oh my god I just read this hurr". I made the thread because I love the book. [editline]06:45AM[/editline]
Well here in America I'm tired of everyone reading this book and thinking they suddenly have a revelation and know that the government is turning evil and say everything they do is coming true from this book. Please.
You know, it's not part of the curriculum at all, even here. It is, however, a book of high literary merit. That's why many high school kids read it. It's extremely useful when taking the AP exam.
I suddenly want to read this book now.
I guess he regrets not reading the quote properly.
