1984 sux tits. you maniac!
This book is nothing like people think.
In what regard? I hope to God you aren't claiming it's a bad book.
I will have to read this book. But why such a random date as 1984?
I will have to read this book. But why such a random date as 1984?
I'm actually not sure what the significance in the year was. I knew it at one point. But the whole idea is that this is Orwell's image of what the world would be like in the year 1984, if things kept going the way they were.
This book should be an obligatory read for all high-schoolers.
This book should be an obligatory read for all high-schoolers.
I somewhat agree, but if we do that it'll end up with the reputation of "To Kill a Mockingbird"... which was admittedly a very good book, but everyone hates it because they were "forced" to read it. I read 1984 the first time for a school project, however I chose it from a list of 50 or so books.
[sp]I felt like he just conformed to survive, which I think he did.[/sp]
[sp]It's made clear he didn't conform to survive: Initially, while all the torture malarkey was going on, that was his plan, but in the end he didn't have a single negative thought regarding everything he once hated.[/sp]
I will have to read this book. But why such a random date as 1984?
Well the book was written in 1948. I guess he just switched those numbers around.
I am bumping this thread, as i just finished the book. Definitely one of the best books i have ever read, the last 20 or 30 pages actually made me feel depressed from the motives of "The party", only something this well written could have an effect like that. Also in my version, there is an introduction written by someone that tells the entire story and complains how the book is not relevant because it is now passed 1984, so skip the introduction and read the novel first, as i luckily did. [editline]07:42AM[/editline]
I read a theory that Oceania actually controls the whole world and just tells people there's a war to keep them shitting their pants.
Julia kind of mentions that herself, she says that it's the government dropping the bombs on their own people.
Okay, but he was an admitted socialist.
Probably in the same way people admit many of Capitalism's flaws, but still propose it as the best available.
I found something peculiar. War is Peace “I just want you to know that, when we talk about war, we're really talking about peace.” - George W. Bush Freedom is Slavery "Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do." - Rudy Giuliani Ignorance is Strength "The truth is a useless commodity that will hang around your neck like an albatross all the way to the homeless shelter." - Jeb Bush Also an interesting read: http://www.studentsfororwell.org/
"I hope that one day mankind and fish will be able to cooexist peacefully. George W. Bush
This book is fucking amazing. The few people in my class who hated it were the people who enjoyed How to Make a Bird. Which is actually a a godawful book.
2+2=5 Just finished reading the book last week. Great read.
Ah god so many spoiler lines !!!
Everyone should read 1984.
I did, when i was 12. Great book.
My only problem with this book, is that Orwell seemed to use [sp]The notes from Weinstein, or whatever his name is, I read it a while ago[/sp] as a proxy for all his political thoughts, he didn't seem to spread it out across the book very well, it was just a very concentrated 7 or so pages of political ideas, which for a short while left me feeling like I was reading a report, but HEY, it had a good ending so overall it has good reviews from me.
Ignorance is bliss :-D
Is a great book, but as people have said before I think the sex wasn't really needed. I DONT CARE IF HER VAGINA WAS WARM FUCKkkk
I watched the movie as well, it was more than decent (really reminds you of Half-Life²...)
Getting the audio book. Read is for chumps.
Everyone should read 1984.
.
I didn't like the book. Mainly because of the ending. [sp]In the end, there's no hope for things to turn better. He accepts the big Brother and loves him. The brainwashing was succesful. Theres nothing anyone can do against the party. And that's something that's the total opposite of my thinking[/sp] I'd like to mention here the other book, Fahrenheit 451, which has a similar setting and a long time a similar plot. Only that Guy Montag [sp]is able to flee in the end. With that he saved himself and meets other refugees. At last, you see the city getting nuked, but that's the event for a new beginning. Life goes on.[/sp] There's always hope. Or at least, that's what I like to think. I know that this post will probably be followed by a huge shitstorm. But just mind that this is my opinion and mine only. I accept the other opinions on it too and I can understand why they like the book.

start fucking people and you will destroy the authoritarian government
Ingsoc only won in the book because Winston was the worst rebel ever. "I will die for the cause" "I don't want to die for the cause bloo bloo bloo" It's pretty shit.
From what I remember, it wasn't well written at all.
no, you are right, but the things that [sp]Winston did started the wave that eventually threw the government over, it's written in past tense[/sp]
[sp]He became an unperson; everyone forgot about him. I have no idea how he managed to "start the wave that eventually threw the government over" - as I recall, the only party member that he influences is Julia, and she dies too. And the only proles he talked to about the government was that senile old man in the bar.[/sp]
