In the original movie, the commies flew in on civilian airliners and parachuted to their objectives. Likely overwhelmed the air force and others by creating just too many bogies to track and intercept. Ground forces would have to deploy to cities. If the attack were on a holiday weekend, many forces would likely be on leave, and not ready to stand up and fight.

I hope the Chinese are shown to act with intelligence in the movie. The biggest problem with the first one was the sheer stupidity of the Red Army.
If the Chinese use skillful squad tactics and fight using their brains, and are beaten only by clever guerilla tactics and forest skirmish moves, I may watch it. In the first one, a few high schoolers went Rambo on professional Soviet soldiers, hence it was bullshit. But guerilla tactics can do some surprising things. In WWII, the French Resistance, made of an army who couldn't even put up the slightest fight in the War, killed untold tens if not hundreds of thousands of professional German soldiers using guerilla warfare.
Well you have to remember that the invading army was comprised of troops from Central and South America. But yeah I see your point about the Red Army being a little incompetent.
Then again it was just a movie. And we all know how antagonists are usually portrayed in some films.
