Why is it so important to do things "for your country"

It all comes down to the uprising of nationalist tendencies in the 1800s in Europe... up until that point, patriotism and nationalism were not such important values. Ultimately, you shouldn't feel obligated to do anything for your country. Nationalism was an invention that would help band people together so that they would be strong enough to take over land for themselves. It's a machination to aid the government.

Define proper; because I don't define proper as nuking an entire city just to prove a point.
"good of the many" bullshit.
I like to think I'm more important than everybody else. I wouldn't die for my country, but I'd gladly let others die for it.

Pearl harbor is a "point"?

People forget that war has changed it face a lot (MW2 taught me this :downs:), so probably we'll never see another "world war", but a lot of "small country says "fuck you" to a bigger one and the bigger one runs the small country over" wars.
because every nation needs someone to defend it and if you want to live here you should be willing to defend it also, no freeloaders allowed, ok

It was Japans way of showing a point that US should sell some goddamn oil to Japan.

What if canada gets involved?
Switzerland is a goddamn small place for 10 million draft dodgers.
Define proper; because I don't define proper as nuking an entire city just to prove a point.
To be fair, we did warn the inhabitants in those cities days before we nuked them. Also, they were targeted for tactical purposes not because we wanted to blow up cities.
Not saying I support the decision, I'm just giving it representation.

Because we have a biological need to remain within a group, and therefor we naturally look upon self sacrifice for the society as good, regardless of the consequences for others or the moral implications.

What I was really saying, is that "proper" is subjective, so you can't simple state that some wars were proper, while other were improper, because it's all opinion.

That's not a biological need, Einstein.

Didn't the warning go like "We're gonna kill you unless you surrender!"
And blowing up one city might've sufficed.
Have you read "On the Rainy River"? That story reminds me of this.

Except we were close to a treaty at the time of the nuking, so the whole thing was a big US penis parade.

Look into objectivism if you really seriously want to find the answers to your questions.
What is Ayn Rand? I always hear about it on FP but never get the time to look it up.
Ayn Rand was an Author who created the philosophy of "Objectivism", which is a philosophy which is entirely based on logic and reason. It says that the purpose of ones life is the pursuit of ones rational self interest, and supports such ideas as Individualism, Small government, and Capitolism.
