It's the most simplictic type of things which do the worse types of damage... For example. If you unscrew a bar stools legs(ones with the metal holding pieces) you automatically have a very, very deadly blunt weapon.

Just told my theory to a friend:
Sawtooth pattern in that wheel
At it rotates, the firing pin slides up then drops onto the bullet
Gear pulls the belt through as the pin slides back up the next tooth
If I had the bullets I'd make guns.
