The Worst Thing You Have Ever Heard Someone Say About Music V2
yeah but that's dumb where do you start drawing the line exactly? if it gets longer than 3 minutes?
Simple chord structure, harshness all around, and a general "go fuck yourself" attitude. Sorry if that's sort of a vague description but I know when my punkdar goes off.
post-punk is like that but it forgot to take its anti-depressants.

well i can assure you kid a would sound really different if nirvana never existed
but that's prob not a fair thing to say
Maybe, Nirvana pretty much brought Alternative to the masses.
:munch:
nope, none of them even knew what a major chord was
hell john lydon couldn't even really sing
that's exactly what makes punk punk, the fact that you don't give a fuck about anything, just do whatever
thom yorke doesn't know the slightest bit about music theory either, said so himself
Part of punk is the image, it's likely that was just an act.

well radiohead has quite simple chord structures (if you disagree with that then you haven't seen complex chord structures buddy)
radiohead sometimes does have quite a harsh feel (harsh if you mean a specific raw aesthetic, definitely present and represented if anything by spring reverb)
and a go fuck yourself attitude?
have you seen thom yorke in interviews?
Part of punk is the image, it's likely that was just an act.
There are quite a few punk bands that don't look like a bunch of drop-outs who just got in a fight. Look at Joy Division or Husker Du or Refused.
Part of punk is the image, it's likely that was just an act.
no the sex pistols were just a group of kids who picked up guitars and learned 5th chords, and judging from john lydon's work afterwords, it definitely wasn't an act
[editline]11th March 2011[/editline]
the image was the show and clothing, the music was utterly secondary, they could have played pop tunes really
[editline]11th March 2011[/editline]
to those rating me dumb, either join in or butt out

Harsh in some songs, but there's a lot of ballads and stuff and even their heavier stuff doesn't have that "striped-down" feel to it as most other punk bands so I don't consider them punk.

meh
either way big orchestral classical influenced prog rock was big in the 70's till punk rock killed it as long as there are dip-shits who can't really play guitar and hate people punk will always be around, it'll just appear in different forms which i guess was my point
there's definitely something hardcore punky in arcade fire. from the way they act on stage to the way they write their music.

I can see a lot of post-punk stuff in their basslines and drums like in Powerout or Rebellion.
"the prodigy is drum and bass"
some of their earlier rave stuff was quite breakbeat/jungle-ish
I can see a lot of post-punk stuff in their basslines and drums like in Powerout or Rebellion.
yeah that and just the fact that usually there's this almost cacophonous sound in the background for a lot of their songs
The people who go around saying "all music nowadays is shit" need to realise that the music charts (which is usually what they base their assumptions on) is going through an R&B/Hip-hop craze, and it won't last forever. Something new will come along, or something old will experience a comeback, and then there will be a completely different group of people who will say "all music nowadays is shit".
I for one am waiting for the comeback of prog rock, where songs in the top-10 are 8 and a half minutes (like Roundabout) :smug:
We can keep dreaming, but it's never going to happen. I think the last big pull towards that comeback was Dream Theater seeing much more commercial success (due in part to Guitar Hero/Rock band), but with Mike Portnoy leaving and all unless their next album is just as much a great album (and THEN a major success), then we might be hoping for the impossible to come true.
Crunkcore will make it's glorious comeback, mark my words.

Because it is way better than your pussy prog rock.

I hate the Sex Pistols. So much.
Don't care for Arcade Fire
Don't care for Radiohead much either
And I loathe Nirvana, albeit mostly for how painfully overrated Kurt Kobain is.
Never heard of Public Image Ltd. but I can only imagine that if they're another punk band I won't like them.
I am a prog fan through and through, so I really don't like most simple 4-chord songs that don't have something special about them. And my innate hatred for punk stems from both this, and the fact that I have not heard a single punk band with a vocalist that I can tolerate for more than a fraction of a second.

Should've posted something like this

I think this whole argument is a good place as any to bring up my opinion on prog vs progressive.
To me even though they are logically synonymous, prog is not progressive necessary, and progressive is not prog necessarily.
Prog is a sound, an influence, stemming back from classical and jazz, captured in the sound of 70s bands like Yes and Genesis.
Progressive is music which does what it can to move music as a whole forward.
Some bands are both, King Crimson for example are arguably the predecessors of jazz metal. Some bands are one but not the other. For example bands like White Willow, while prog, are effectively another 70s prog band, and as such are doing nothing to advance music really. This is where I would argue that Radiohead are definitely progressive, but wouldn't say for a second that they're prog.
My $0.02
I don't get it. Progressive Rock adapts from other genres as well as it's own, Radiohead I would say is margainally more Art Rock than progressive rock.
You wouldn't hear them use classical styles nor jazz at all.
A band can quite easily be both, though.
I didn't even understand the original point. :psyduck:
Neither do I, and I think I started the argument.
the worst thing i've ever heard anyone say about music was that time a guy called radiohead punk.
P.E. at school. Teacher says he'll put on some old pop music. Iron Maiden goes on. :suicide:
P.E. at school. Teacher says he'll put on some old pop music. Iron Maiden goes on. :suicide:
I don't see a problem, it is old popular music.

They were popular. But not pop. Besides, why complain, they kick ass!
:colbert:
You don't have to insult a band someone listens to just because you don't think its metal.
A friend of mine does that to band names whether he likes them or not, Megadump, shitknot, Murder Dicks, I Am Maddened ext.
"i can't understand what they are saying in death metal"
-non metal heads
well you can't a lot of the time, but i don't give a shit what they are saying anyway because it sounds awesome
"i can't understand what they are saying in death metal"

I've heard that about "rock" in general.
But in all seriousness it can be tricky.

I personally don't care if I don't here every lyric, the music and expression is what matters.
