if he means sonic youth then yeah there's no skill required, only imagination

I was listening to some Mezzanine and when Teardrop came on my mom asked why I was listening to House Music.
Pretty much the only thing I can recall when it comes to that
my biggest qualm against prog-rock has always been what i felt was a total lack of imagination and a large inclination towards guitar fapping

You need to rethink some of that.
I mean, something like Pink Floyd's Animals.. Is a glorious effort of songwriting and musicianship.
Concept albums are pretty much a given when it comes to progressive music. I'm not sure how you miss that :psyduck:
having a specific concept doesn't mean it's imaginative
i've never been a fan of brash escapism so a concept album about the life of polly the sheep or something ridiculous like that sounds dreadful to me
my favourite pink floyd album is probably a tie between the first one or dark side of the moon but some of the other stuff pink floyd has done i find awful

and animals is actually one of my least favourite pink floyd albums, something about roger waters just projects something i really don't like

You're being unspecific. If it's the pretentiousness you don't like, just say it. That's why prog get's a bad word.
People dismiss the underlying tones to most progressive music and miss the effect it has.
I do get you that you aren't too keen on "outlandish" music. But it is just those changes in direction of the music that keeps me intrigued.
You don't know where it is heading for, something like Larks' Tongues in Aspic was really enjoyable for me because it was so explosive and unexpected.

Yes are still very imaginative. It's just the listener that has to change in order to get into it.
Not many critics want to like Close to the Edge because there isn't much you can say about lyrics that are "I get up, I get down".
"I get up, I get down" is a clever metaphor about sexual intercourse.
