a friend of mine was off work for 3 weeks with a terrible case of The Stranglers
Someone once told me that it's not music if there are no instruments in it. They said it was just computer generated noise. Oh my god I wanted to punch them so hard.
Someone once told me that it's not music if there are no instruments in it. They said it was just computer generated noise. Oh my god I wanted to punch them so hard.
Depends what they were referring to If it was - say - Merzbow, then computer-generated noise is exactly what it is
Depends what they were referring to If it was - say - Merzbow, then computer-generated noise is exactly what it is
All music ever that doesn't contain instruments, in his case. He's the kind of person who only listens to Metallica, AC/DC etc and rejects all else. Now I'm not saying that Metallica and AC/DC are bad (they are good bands who make music I enjoy) but his views on music are very blinkered.
I showed Queen's "The Invisible Man" to an ex-friend once and he said it sucks, but he loves Scatman's version "just because it's funny". He even claims Scatman John's version is the original and Queen's is just a lame cover. His music collection mostly consists of Blink 182, Bowling For Soup, and other pop punk bands. :suicide:
Whats wrong with pop punk?
Nothing really, I'm just stating that this is the only genre he is willing to listen to and never tries to listen to anything else unless he finds it funny. Otherwise he finds it crap.
Nothing really, I'm just stating that this is the only genre he is willing to listen to and never tries to listen to anything else unless he finds it funny. Otherwise he finds it crap.
I originally started listening to System Of A Down because I thought that Vicinity Of Obscenity was funny. After a month or 2 it really grew on me and I started enjoying it and all of SoaD's other songs.
All music ever that doesn't contain instruments, in his case.
Have you considered telling him that anything which can be called music must have been produced by at least one instrument, by definition of both words? Instrument only means "a thing what you can use for to be playing of the songs" in most dictionaries, which is why it includes everything from voices to software synthesizers. And last I checked nobody made songs by spontaneously willing soundwaves into existence.
Depends what they were referring to If it was - say - Merzbow, then computer-generated noise is exactly what it is
Yeah but you know that if they say it like that, even though it's right they don't mean it in the way it's supposed to be meant and therefore they are retards
Depends what they were referring to If it was - say - Merzbow, then computer-generated noise is exactly what it is
It's still composed. Despite it being made a certain way, devices are used to synthesize expression. Onto another point: Noise may be uncomfortable, but it's meant to force you into submission. Which is why I find it intriguing. Obviously it's weird and pretty much insane, but it's an art form. Lou Reed made Metal Machine Music, therefore he heard it all. Think he's insane?
I think of Merzbow on the same level as "artists" who paint a black square on a canvas and consider it art
If someone violantly plays a saxophone with no actual musical structure, you can't just say "Wow, that's bad music." I don't think I'm worthy to judge Noise because I don't listen to it much, but there is something behind the concept.

It's hard to take it seriously, however. Like the way people say Merzbow's "1930" album is a concept album about the turbulent events of the year. Yeah, it's loud and brutal, but there's not much else you can express through that genre. Avante-Garde genres are great but it's a bit hard to take it seriously if it's just being experimental for the sake of being experimental with no concept, or themes or anything... Meh, just my two cents.
Is it or is it not computer-generated noise
Well it's composed by a human so it isn't computer-generated no
