I'll be honest, I skipped it when I was first reading through as well.
Of course when I saw how many people were going on about it (and realized later in the comic that it actually was relevant to the rest of the plot) I went back and read it.

I couldn't skip it because I thought it was way cooler than Homestuck.
I read it, but I had to go back several times to unserstand it.
I remember skimming over a lot of it on my first read-through, but I've read it through several times since then.

I think I was about to skip the intermission, but it didn't feel right. I was just clicking ==> because I was dumb and didn't know about the ALL PAGES thing so I was doing that and It seemed to be really long so I just went back and read it.
It is really important to read, regardless of how good it is, because it sets a whooole lot of things up for the story later, characters-wise and event-wise. But seriously, why is everyone flipping their shit about it? I mean, it's just the intermission, not like a whole act. Skipping to Act 5 or something is awful, but it's not THAT bad. You could get away with skipping it and generally understand things that happen later, if you just go with it. Much less enjoyable though.
The average Homestuck reader, when reading for the first time:
1. Has not heard of or read Problem Sleuth
2. Has not heard of or played text adventure games
3. etc
Therefore they do not get half the jokes and references, and have no conceivable idea that the Intermission could be everything but an Intermission.
Therefore, it is not surprising that people skipped it, especially when they have even the smallest understanding of how long the comic will be.

I read Jailbreak, Bard's Quest, and Problem Sleuth before attempting to read Homestuck.
But I also skipped it the first time, I quickly realized the error of my ways and read it after a little while.
