They're all 13, but after the trip they'll all be 16. The pre-scratch trolls are all 19 in human years, and the post-scratch human kids are all like 15 or 16. I think Dirk is older then the others.

The original 4 kids are all 13 from acts 1 to 6. John was born on April 13th, 1996. Jade on December 1, 1995. Dave on December 3, 1995. Rose on December 4, 1995.

They're TV thirteen, sorta like how the kids in Avatar are supposed to be like thirteen or the player characters in Pokemon are supposed to be ten. It's just a bullshit young age to make them relatable.
Plus not to mention that it's pretty much impossible to write a young character with any sort of depth without them seeming older than they already are. Thirteen year olds aren't terribly deep so either you're gonna write an obnoxious moody piece of shit that nobody likes or you're going to write an actual character that's uncharacteristically mature for their fake age.
