Also this blog has a very interesting entry in it: "What if Gamzee killed Nepeta before you?"
That leads me to wonder if Nepeta was not always intended to have little to no effect on the story but is instead a dropped plot thread. Think about it, if Gamzee had gotten Nepeta in front of Equius he would have certainly risen to her rescue and at least tried to defeat Gamzee, possibly making him into a hero. It would illustrate the strength of moirailigence as a (pale) romantic relationship and lend purpose to an otherwise meaningless existence for both of them. There are 0 instances of Equius accidentally slipping restraint, even when Nepeta isn't around, and while I've chocked that up to him just not having it in him before what if it's just because it was no longer important with the direction Hussie ran the comic? What other role does Nepeta have in the comic at all besides filler for the Leo sign? Nothing, even her ancestors were virtually useless as anything but barely used tools in the larger scheme of things and their uses could easily be shifted towards other characters.
