Actually I've got a bit of a theory about that.
I don't think John is set up for getting with Rose, I think he's going to bang her mom.
Well, Roxy, but close enough.
John and Rose have little to no chemistry. John is one of those people that's not really fun to antagonize in the way that Rose likes to antagonize people because he straight up brushes it off or doesn't understand it (hence Egderp). He's also kinda stupid and to isn't that interesting to talk to in Rose's conversations. John also didn't seem all that interested in her for any reason other than "Karkat said so" and even when he got the "wonk" with his fight with Jack John seemed to not really read anything into it or even react at all except to intemperate it as a ruse like Rose intended.
You know what he did react to? The Pink girl floating through space. While saving her isn't really much of a big deal, his reacting to her presence was. She at least left an impression, even if it's not able to be interpreted, because once again he's Egderp, he's at least going to remember her (or her feet). They also kinda jive as compliments to each other, each sort of loves everyone like a puppy loves everyone, with genuine enthusiasm and love for their fellow man, John in the sense that he wants to be the hero and Roxy's genuine selflessness in helping the carapaces. They're also both really ditzy (Roxy's not stupid, but she is ditzy, John is still Egderp).
That's also coupled with the fact that John became hormonal and bitchy the update after seeing her. Kid needs to get laid and she's the only other game in town.
