It's wastes time if it's irrelevant and doesn't do anything to forward character development. This is the first time Dirks shown a strong flaw so it does its job.

This update developed Dirk as a character, and a lot of character development has happened through these dynamics.
If Hussie only concentrated on the plot, Homestuck would lose a lot of its appeal of being flexible, especially if it did not retain a certain element of silliness. Homestuck as a whole should be, and is cohesive, and I did not mean to imply it should not be, but there is no reason to power through only plot relevant stuff.
I don't know, it just mystifies me that people are dissatisfied with the comic in any capacity.

Also, I read through Hussie's old blog, and at one point he said that he wanted Homestuck to last a year, less than two years, tops.
He also said that there would be "a few more characters" and that "the trolls will be fleshed out later in the story for a bit"
