Ok, so, ZeroAE (wait, thats not my name, I should change it) explanation of why Jade is a good character.
A character is interesting if it is three-dimensional, acting differently in different situations.
Jade can be wrongly accused of being boring as he acts the same for a good time of the comic, but that is because she is the last one to enter the game.
Character development comes from conflict.
Jade doesnt have much character development at first because she is the last one to play the game. While everyone is fighting for their lives, she is sleeping. Furthermore, as she lives in happy island in the middle of nowhere with her dog, there is no much conflict anyways for her to show more of her character.
Only when her dream-self dies, her status quo changes.
After dreaming in the dream bubble (page 4748), we can see her change, as it is the first conflict she has.
Prospit, her second home, is destroyed, and the horrorterrors changes her care-free mood.
She doesn't have the patience to hear her friends, as she always have, she is fed up from them.
She sees the string in her hands as something useless now. Serious business is serious now. She cant waste time on those things.
After prototyping her dead dream self with becsprite, she learns about a side of her she didnt know about, about a Jade, opposite of her, that lost everything. A Jade that only cries, because she lost, someone Jade didn't know about, as her life in the island never prepared her for that.
That Jade could be her. It is her.
We can appreciate the change from the always happy Jade to a more serious one, as the different factors that come late in the story change her status quo, and changes her mood, character, etc, as she affronts new challenges.

Of course Jade personality at first was abstract, as her life was so.....nothing-ever-happens-like, we cant know how she actually is, as she is always happy.
Compare that to John conflict with Dad, Dave and Bro, and Rose and Mom, and you can see Jade is in the bottom of the teen-family-issues-meter.
The sudden change for her, from Paradise Island to "'all your friends are in danger, and your dream self is dead" makes Jade development somewhat sudden, as it is binary, unlike the others, that are stretched over time.
A lot of this was stuff I was feeling back when she was being introduced in Act 2 and 3. I felt that she just needed a good little catastrophe to get her grounded, and so she did in Descend. Her interactions with Karkat were just fantastic, and really gave her a great foil she worked against throughout Act 5, and made both of them really likeable. Early on in the comic is where I heard a lot about her being a Parody Sue, and then it was affirmed in Descend and Act 5. I can't really speak for people's opinions on her now, but those concerns have been allayed for me well in the past.
She's had a pretty dire lack of focus on Jade since Cascade, though, with only a one-sided conversation from John and a break-up of a relationship we didn't even know existed. Hopefully some interaction with the B2 kids and whatever crap will be there when they arrive will spark a bit of life back into her. It's been a while.
Changing the theme, is the Squiddles album worth buying? I have been buying the albums chronologically, and I have Homestuck Vol.1 to 5, and I just got Alternia. But Squiddles just seems as an album made just for ironic purposes.

the squiddles album is a work of musical genius that should not be missed out on under any circumstances. the experience of listening to it changed my life forever. i learned things about myself and about the world that will alter the way i perceive reality for years to come.
