No, I mean that almost all of the scenes where Scout and Sniper were involved could've been taken out and almost nothing would've changed. The only thing they really added to the narrative was letting the main base know that the train was coming, they had no other consequence on the plot and they took up half the movie. I felt like the whole thing was just a super obvious excuse to have a cool train crash.
I mean it was a lot of fun, but it's still just filler.
Just because it didn't advance the plot doesn't make it filler. It was designed to be tense, and there was a possibility it could change things.
Yeah, I'm probably being too critical. It was just a fun action short that wasn't pretending to be anything else. I'm gonna stop now.

Again, this really isn't... A thing. It's like saying that chase scenes in action movies should be cut out, because they're going to get there anyway, right?
Loved the Shining and True Lies-ish references. The train crash looked straight out of Super 8.
Sound design could've used a little work, though. Seemed oddly quiet in some parts
That was quite good
Amazing what fans can get up to
The sound really really let the whole thing down.

It would be like if you were watching an action movie, and then it suddenly cut to two random characters having a chase scene somewhere else, and then it cut back to the main characters with the chase scene having no bearing on the actual plot; it was just there because the director wanted a chase scene in his movie that was of absolutely no consequence. As if he said "Yeah, I know you guys are here for the chase scene, so here you go. Now, let's watch something completely different."

Well, to be fair, it did set up that final car coming in at the end for that extra laugh. That was neat.

Not everything in a movie needs to be about resolving the plot. Failure is a part of a story as much as success is. The Scout and Sniper tried to take care of the train on their own means, but ultimately scout hadn't thought out the possibility of there being multiple bombs.

The Chess bit reminded me of the scenes where the old man was playing chess with himself that used to appear in Pixar movies.
That soundtrack was fantastic have to say.
The sound really really let the whole thing down.
Yeah, the whole train crash scene especially could have been a bit more spectacular if a bit more time was spent on the sound.
For a fan-made project, it was pretty extraordinary.
i love it how this is basically what garrysmod comics have evolved into
I think the trailer was a bit misleading, it was made to look like a huge 30 minute adventure from the trailer, but the actual short is just a nice 14 minute little adventure.
I think I liked it more than the trailer, tbh.
I felt like it wasn't sure what it wanted to be, though. There was this whole subplot with the Scout and Sniper where I didn't understand the purpose, there was this subplot with Heavy and Medic over a chess game or something, [sp]A Spy comes in at the end and does nothing,[/sp] and it seemed to switch between silly and serious about a thousand times.
I disagree.
Scout and Sniper's thing was, like someone else already said, for tension. And it also set up the finale, because Scout's investigation revealed Pyro's rubber ducky car that ultimately foiled the entire plan. The meat of the plot is Red's struggle to stop the train, and the Scout/Sniper thing was a huge part of that. Just because they didn't ACTUALLY stop the train doesn't mean that they were pointless. Their point was to contribute to the struggle and to set up details about the train itself.
The thing with the chess game was a foreshadowing of the finale. It shows that Medic is calculating and considers all the rules and variables while Heavy's problem-solving method is to just march right in and do it himself, rules be damned. Medic can't find a logical way to stop the train since stopping a speeding train in such a short span of time is all but impossible. But Heavy doesn't give a damn about the rules and just walks right up there himself. Get it now?
The Spy was, again, for tension and surprise. It was time to breathe a sigh of relief, and all the trouble was gone...BUT WAIT, A SPY! Blu's final, desperate move. But the Heavy was behind him! Safe at last. Just because the Spy didn't succeed doesn't mean he didn't contribute to the movie. It's an action/comedy film; the meat is in the twists and turns and timing, not so much on how it all ties together in the end.
Lastly, I thought the balance of comedy and seriousness was precisely on par with TF2's tone and sense of humor. Go watch Expiration Date; it had about the same balance. This whole video reminded me HEAVILY of Expiration Date, just without words.
I will give you that the conclusion wasn't nearly as strong and well-woven as Expiration Date's, but the tension was real and it gripped me the whole way through. That's exactly what it set out to do and it did it well.
I'm glad they didn't attempt voice acting, or splicing together TF2 voice clips.
Nothing worse than seeing a good SFM video with pre-pubecent voiceactors pretending to be TF2 characters :v:

Valve gave them access to the actual voice actors

Not always true; some of the best videos from the last Saxxys had very good replications of the voices, particularly Scout.
But I do appreciate that they didn't try to overdo it. It really would've degraded the quality. I'm actually quite impressed that they managed to tell such a good story with so many details without any words.
Am I the only one who thinks the overall sound design in this sounds majorly unfinished?

Nah, I think just about everyone noticed. Sounded better to me than Expiration Date, though.
Then why for god's sake didn't they use them? The video was amazing without them, so imagine it with the actual voice actors. It would be incredible.
Probably couldn't think of any good dialogue and went with the silent approach.
the little guy with the cats at the end got me
This was absolutely amazing but I have to agree with more intense music it would be even more awesome.
Would of been so much better with the voices from the cast also the music felt lacking.
I really hope they release those cat models!

making good animations in sfm is one thing
writing good dialogue is another
seriously, writing good dialogue is like the hardest part of a creation like this. i had nothing against the fact that there was no dialogue in this, pulling off a story with no dialogue is a skill itself
Yeah but at least a few grunts/gasps during jumps and shit would have been way better.
I wish TF2 was as good as its animations.
Was really hoping they'd have the TF2 remix of Seven Nations Army like in the original trailer

I so wanted to hear a full version of that.
Besides all that it was awesome! my only real complain (once again music) the music felt a bit lack luster near the end when [sp]the heavy stood infront of the train and the medic ubered him[/sp] the music kind of dipped down and was far less bombastic than what i think it should have been.
other then that it was fucking awesome, going to get one of those posters too.
Kinda like Guardians of the Galaxy. The trailers all used Spirit in the Sky, but the song wasn't in the movie. Still, whenever I hear that song, I can only think of the movie.
